     Peter, while I am as skeptical in regard to true "shape-shifting" as you 
are, DNA does seem to offer at least a hint of a mechanism by which it might be 
accomplished.

     In other words, it would require only a comparatively slight shift of 
human DNA to become that of almost any lower mammal.

     We share 15 percent of our DNA with the lowly banana.
