June 13th 
    1660: wamsetta, a wampanoag, and his younger brother, metacomet
    (various spellings), have requested "english" names from the plymouth
    court. Today, their names will be officially be changed to alexander and
    philip pokanoket. Philip would eventually be called "king philip." 
    1715: as a part of the yamassee war, today, south carolina militia, led
    by george chicken, battle coastal indians. The fight, which took place
    near the ponds on goose creek, resulted in a defeat for the indians. The
    indians sustained forty fatalities. Many of the coastal indians would
    withdraw their support for the war after this defeat. 
    1722: today, sixty indians will attack brunswick, maine, the site of fort
    george. Nine settler families are captured, and their farms are burned.
    Cannon fire from the fort, and a subsequent attack from the militia,
    force the indians to flee. Eighteen indians will be killed in the fighting.
    Europeans attacked some indians last year at norridgewock last year.
    This attack was believed to be a retaliatory gesture. 
    1783: georgia governor (also captain general and commander in chief,
    lyman hall, issues a proclamation forbidding the trespassing or
    settlement of whites in creek, or cherokee, lands. 
    1838: today, lt.r.h.k.whiteley, will depart ross' landing (chattanooga,tn.)
    With the second group of cherokee "prisoners" to be forcibly removed
    to the indian territory. This group will number 875 cherokees. They will
    travel by boat to lewisburg, northwest of little rock arkansas, where low
    river levels will necessitate an overland march. They will reach their
    destination on august 5th. 
    1854: creek treaty 
    1866: after postponing the fort laramie treaty conference, in
    southwestern wyoming, to allow for more indians to arrive, the
    conference reconvenes. Later in the day, col. Henry carrington arrive
    near fort laramie with almost 700 men. Standing elk asks him why he is
    there. Carrington says he is there to guard the new bozeman trail.
    Standing elk tells carrington that this trail has not been agreed upon yet,
    and carrington says he will guard the trail anyway. 
    1870: indians attack a railroad work crew near grinnell, kansas. Cavalry
    responds to defend the workers, and three indians are killed, ten
    wounded 
    1876: general crook leaves his base camp on goose creek, to search for
    "hostiles" along the rosebud. 
    1877: wahlitits, and two other members of white bird's band of nez
    perce kill a man named richard devine. Tomorrow they will kill three
    more men. 
    1938: today, certain surplus or ceded "non-mineral, unallotted, and
    unreserved" lands, which had been set aside, will be returned to tribal
    ownership on the fort berthold reservation in north dakota, based on the
    indian reorganization act. 
    1961: 6/20/1961 am.ind.chicago conf."what inds.want"-they adopt a
    declaration of indian purpose.
