Phil Fontaine, national leader of the Assembly of First Nations, is
scheduled to sit down today with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi
Annan, the first meeting of its kind for a Canadian native leader.

A spokesperson for the AFN, which represents the country's on-reserve
natives, said the introductory meeting is expected to cover various issues,
including the AFN's broadening links with international indigenous groups.
Mr. Fontaine is planning to invite Mr. Annan to the AFN's annual general
assembly in the 2000.
