Health officials urge limit on bluefish, striped bass consumption

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) People who eat bluefish and striped bass from Long
Island Sound should cut their consumption to just six fish a year in light
of new studies on the dangers of industrial pollutants, state health
officials say.

The recommended 75 percent drop in consumption the first since the state
began issuing advisories on the two types of fish in 1988 is based on new
data about the long-term impact of PCBs, the state Department of Public
Health said.

In the past, health officials recommended people eat no more than two
bluefish or striped bass each month. Officials did not change the
recommendation that pregnant women or young children eat no bluefish or
striped bass from the Sound.

Dr. Gary Ginsberg, a health department toxicologist, said Monday the
restriction is due to ''a better understanding of PCB health risks,'' not a
change in the level of the pollutant in the Sound which has been cleansing
itself of the chemical.

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were used as cooling agents in
electrical transformers for several decades until the 1970s, when they were
linked to cancer and liver damage. They have been banned for more than a
decade.

But a study of children born 10 years ago to women in the Great Lakes
states and in the Netherlands who regularly ate fish from contaminated
waters found the diet impaired the children's neurological systems and
damaged motor functions.

As a result, state health officials cut the acceptable level of PCB in the
fish from 2 parts to 0.1 parts per million.
