Young Joseph (Heinmot Tooyalaket) tells the agents: "it has always belonged to our people. It comes unclouded to them from our fathers, and we will defend this land as long as a drop of Indian blood warms the hearts of our men." Young Joseph asks President Grant to allow them to stay in their ancestral lands. On this date, President Grant issues an Executive Order prohibiting white settlers from claiming title to Wallowa Valley land. 1876: General Crook & 1000 soldiers reach the Rosebud today. They find no Indians. JUNE 17 1824: The Office of Indian Affairs is started. 1838: The third group of CHEROKEE "prisoners" to be forcibly removed to the Indian Territory will leave from Ross' Landing (Chattanooga, Tn.). This group will number 1,070. Many were forced from their homes at gunpoint and have few provisions. They will not accept anything from the federal agents except food, for fear of an implied acceptance of the New Echota Treaty. 1954: The Federal Termination Act is passed meaning no more federal help for Indians. 1996: A class action suit representing 300,000 American Indians is filed in Federal Court today against the Bureau of Indian Affairs....... JUNE 18 1763: As part of Pontiac's Rebellion, SENECAs will attack Fort Le Boeuf, at present day Waterford, in northwestern Pennsylvania. Half of the garrison of a little more than a dozen men will be killed when the Indians attack, and burn, the fort. The rest of the soldiers will escape. 1934: The Indian Reorganization Act takes place. JUNE 19 ................... 1923: In order to build a reservoir, lands are taken from the Fort Hall Indian reservation today. JUNE 20 ..................... 1675: Today marks the start of "King Philip's war. 1732: A Royal land grant is issued today for Ggeorgia. 1763: As part of Pontiac's rebellion, a force of SENECAs, OTTAWAs, WYANDOTs, and CHIPPEWAs will attack Fort Presque Isle, at present day Erie, in northwestern Pennsylvania. They have had the fort under siege since June 15th. The soldiers numbering less than three dozen, will surrender when the fort goes up in flames. .......... JUNE 21 1674: CHATOT Indians have a mission established for them today west of the Apalachicola River. 1750: French and Indian forces leave Detroit to fight with Pickawillany. ..................... 1876: After preliminary scouting in the area of the Little Big Horn, by Major Marcus Reno, General Alfred Terry holds a planning session with his commanders, Col.John Gibbon and Col.Ggeorge Custer. The plan is for Gibbon's troops to reach the mouth of the Little Big Horn on June 26th. Custer was to follow Reno's earlier path up the Rosebud to near the Little Big Horn.............. JUN22 ............... 1876: Col.george custer, and 611 men of the 7th Cavalry, start up the Rosebud River, moving toward a reported concentration of Indians near the Little Big Horn. They will travel 12 miles, today. Col.John Gibbons, with General Terry accompanying him, starts out for the mouth of the Big Horn River. 1877: General Oliver "One Armed Soldier Chief" Howard leaves Lapwai (APACHE name). He is also called "Cut Arm" for the arm he lost in the Civil War. 1885: Sitting Bull visits Washington D.C. with Buffalo Bill. ................
