In a spin-off of the "life imitating art" axiom, the Custer's Last Stand
Re-enactment is bringing a measure of peace to those with opposing views.

According to three of the principal players in the 10th annual drama, both
tribal enemies and those with varying interpretations of the Custer story
call a truce during the staging of the event.

One Crow tribal participant, Arlo Dawes, said, "The power and force of the
story transcend the volatile issues and Crow politics. The re-enactment
makes many friends. Once a year, people set aside their animosities and
establish a truce while people from all over the world watch."

Dawes, one of the popular drama's narrators, sat down Tuesday with the
actors playing George and Libbie Custer to promote this week's Little Big
Horn Days and the four stagings of Custer's grand finale. British-born
actor Tony Austin and New Jersey native Kathy Justus agreed that the
re-enactment bonds people from many cultures and backgrounds.

Austin, who with Justus played the pageant last year, said his European
roots sparked his interest in Custer. "He's hugely known throughout the
world and it's been rewarding to see the re-enactment grow to include
visitors from all over. The event had a tremendous impact on the rest of
the world and it's actually bringing about what the real thing tried to
accomplish: peace."
