Controversy Surrounds Turner's Buffalo Empire
------------------------------------------------------------------------

<Picture: I>t was Insight that first reported how cable-TV mogul Ted Turner
had all but cornered the bison market, owning 17,000 head on ranches in
Montana, Nebraska and New Mexico (see "How Buffalo Ted Hunts Bison Bucks,"
June 28). Following up the Insight beat, the New York Post says that an
embarrassed Turner is finding a way to take a lower profile as the bison
king. Turner has been a member of the North American Bison Cooperative, or
NABC, and at the same time its leading supplier. The U.S. Department of
Agriculture, or USDA, recently purchased $6 million worth of bison meat from
NABC to be funneled into the Native American Feeding Program, a commodities
provider for the poorest of American Indian families.
. . . . But a rival group, the InterTribal Bison Cooperative, or ITBC, has
charged that Turner's NABC is selling the government the "excess trim," the
fattiest portion, while sending off the steaks at exotic prices to fancy
restaurants. ITBC leader Fred DuBray also charged that Turner and the NABC
were trying to turn the bison, a freedom-loving wild animal sacred to
American Indians, into commercial livestock for slaughter. DuBray contends
that while American Indians always killed bison for food, they only took what
was needed, letting the animals graze entirely on grass as the Great Spirit
clearly intended.
. . . . The Post report says that Turner, instead of remaining out front as
"Buffalo Ted," savior of the sacred bison, is going whole-hog in the
direction of commercial distribution, but with a much lower profile. He will
merge his operations into North American Provisioner, based in Omaha, to
market bison meat to restaurants, fast-food chains, hotels, the military and
schools.
