MON - 6/28: Protecting Tribal Logos and Intellectual Property:
There is a move in the Senate to create legislation to protect Tribal logos,
insignias and intellectual property. If passed, the legislation would
prohibit businesses from exploiting Tribal designs and motifs and could also
help artists protect their intellectual property. Can this legislation
adequately protect Native American intellectual property from free market
forces? Guests include US Senator Bingaman of New Mexico who introduced the
legislation.

TUE - 6/29: What's In A Name?:
There is a story and a history behind each of our family names. For Native
people, many of our names are translations or mutations of our original
tribal names. While some of our names were given to us in honor of our
colonizers. What's the story behind your family name? Invited guests include
Sabrina Little Axe of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma.

WED - 6/30: Book of the Month: "The Scalpel and the Silver Bear":
Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord is the first Navajo woman surgeon, and she bringing
the holistic healing knowledge of her people to western medicine. Her story
shares with us her experience in balancing two completely different worlds
in order to bring quality healthcare to her people. Can western and Native
medicines be combined? Dr. Lori Alvord joins us on this special Book of the
Month edition.

THU - 7/1:Golf: A Native American Sport?:
If you look closely, you'll see that more and more quality championship golf
courses are dotting the Native American landscape. "Golf Digest" reported
that "golf is becoming an uniquely Native American Sport," two southwest
tribes currently host PGA & LPGA qualifying events, and Navajo Golfer Notah
Begay is now on the PGA Tour. Is golf becoming the number one sport in
Native America? Guests TBA.

(3) NAC Wellness Edition Programs for July
*********************************

FRI - 7/2: Dreams Revisited:
The first program on dreams produced such a listener response that the
"Wellness Edition" of Native America Calling is offering a second
opportunity for listeners to call and describe their dreams. Cherokee elder
and dream speaker Pah'rish'ha, will again join host Sharon McConnell and
offer interpretations based on Native traditions. So if you couldn't get an
open phone line during the first dream show, here's your second chance to
talk to Pah'rish'ha!

FRI - 7/9: Natives in Residency: Doctors in Training
For the first time in its three-year history, the "Wellness Edition" leaves
its Anchorage, Alaska studios and travels to Seattle, Washington for a first
hand look at a unique program designed to train American Indians and Alaska
Natives to become Family Practice Physicians. The five-year old project of
the Seattle Indian Health Board is a cooperative effort with Providence
Seattle Medical Center and the University of Washington. Join host, Sharon
McConnell, and her guests from the program, as they discuss "Doctors in
Training" on the next "Wellness Edition" of Native America Calling.

FRI - 7/16: Drugging our Children
Unfortunately, some of our children have behavioral problems that often
times need to be controlled with drugs. Some children have a hard time
paying attention in school and others are too hyper and impulsive. But, are
we too quick to diagnose drugs, such as Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Cylert, in
order to control their behavior? Are there other more traditional methods?
Join host, Sharon McConnell, and her guests, on the next "Wellness Edition"
of Native American Calling as they discuss whether or not these drugs are
always necessary and if perhaps they are over prescribed.

FRI - 7/23: A Star to Follow:
An important part of growing up was having someone you looked to, a role
model whom you admired and wanted to be like. Where do our children find
their heroes and role models today? Are they sports, movie or music stars
or more "down to earth" heroes? On the next "Wellness Edition" of Native
America Calling, host Sharon McConnell and her guests examine today's Native
youth and their role models.

FRI - 7/30: Surviving Breast Cancer:
Breast Cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in America.
Although the rate of Native American Woman diagnosed with breast cancer is
not quite as high as the rates for women of other ethnic backgrounds, this
is still an area of great concern. How do women survive with breast cancer?
Join host, Sharon McConnell and her guests, as they discuss ways to cope
with breast cancer and continue living life.
