October 30, 1999 Search for son ends
By MIKE D'AMOUR -- Calgary Sun
Officials have confirmed the identity of a man found dead in his
car as Alex Sanchez of Bassano, who had been missing for more
than four months. And his mother, who once alleged her son was killed on
the reserve, apologized for her remarks. "When you are desperate, looking
for your son, of course your mind goes wild," Maria Sanchez told the Sun.
"I apologize for what I said -- I am so sorry I said someone killed my son."
Alex Sanchez disappeared June 20 after attending an all-night party with
his girlfriend, Amanda Brass, the mother of his four-year-old child. Since
then, Maria has been relentless in her search for her
missing 19-year-old son. She was allowed to search for her Alex on the
reserve soon after he went missing, but after she alleged her son died as a
result of foul play and publicly stated the community was involved in a
cover-up, she was barred by a band council resolution from the Siksika
lands and threatened with arrest if she should step one foot on the
property. Alex's car was found about 3 p.m. Thursday, upside down,
submerged in water in near Cluny, east of Gleichen. It had been hidden for
months by high water and was discovered in the Crowfeet Creek, only about
two metres from the
Trans-Canada Hwy. Police and the medical examiner ruled out foul play as a
cause of death. "I wish I could have found my son earlier, but now we will
finally be able to put him to rest."
Brass was overcome with grief upon learning the medical examiner had
positively identified her beau through dental records. "She really is
taking this very hard," said Brass' mom, Vivian, from her home on the
Siksika reserve, near Gleichen, about 70 km east of Calgary.
