I have managed to gain full control of the unit and am sending data to it 
over the parallel interface - which works well.

@Benoit - you may find that the unit is multiplexed at that frequency and 
the noisy is being generated by the actual display rather than any 
supporting electronics. If that is the case then perhaps the only solution 
might be to drive the display with your own electronics where you can 
control the multiplexing more - that being said - if this is the cause then 
it might be a bit of a challenge depending on the 'configuration' of the 
actual display.
