New Times, Old sex, Dutch Women and their Playboy Vaginas
[The last couple of months the discussion about pornification and the objectification of women have been a hot issue in the Netherlands. Old feminist issues are once again debated when Dutch documentary maker Sunny Bergman produced her documentary Beperkt Houdbaar (Limited Usability) about the Playboy image that women feel they need to live up to. She states that women are still extremely sexualised and objectified and finds a soulmate in Ariel Levy with her book Female Chauvinist Pigs. This book also raised a lot of controversy in the feminist debate in a country that is regarded as openminded but still is underdeveloped in thinking about contemporary sexuality and media. In the Netherlands, the only alternative voice comes from Dutch lingerie designer Marlies Dekkers with her book Stout (Naughty) where she states that the main power of women lies in her sexuality and she should be naughty to get what she wants. In this pro/contra discussion the Click Me stimulators try to provide an alternative in their open letter to the main Dutch newspapers. Below you can read the translation for all non-dutch speakers.] In the netherlands we seem to be living the old days of angry feminists who want to take the streets. In every corner of society women are discussing sex and porn, but in the mass media we find only a polarized portrait. Is that the reason why we have landed back in the 1970s? Our bimbo culture, the pornification of society, the limited perseverance of the body, are these really the themes that stir us? If we can believe the media, one is either against any impulse towards public sex culture, and one babbles endlessly about the victim position, or one expresses a vital femininity by means of sexuality. Other nuances seem to be lost. This is the reason why all discussions about womanhood in relation to porn do not the go beyond the female victim position and the misery that it engenders. Of course we cannot deny that women are sex objects because of stereotyping, unrealistic beauty standards, and the male gaze which they cannot satisfy. But why do we find endless tirades about victimization in the 21 st century? It does not make us feel any better. Let us have a look at how we think differently. Of course porn is arousing, sexually stimulating, thought-provoking. Of course we can even participate in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) porn culture. Of course we are beyond attitudes of radical fear and hidden prudery. The alternatives in the Netherlands dont seem to go much further than the sexual liberation of Marleen Dekkers and Heleen van Royen and their book Stout (Naughty). In this book they reduce the position of a strong female sexual identity to a SBS6 format. Women are supposed to use their sexuality as a means of power and to be naughty to get what they want. And if we take this suggestion one step further we become like bimbos. What seems to be lost in this discussion is that there are also women who look for a sexuality that is grounded in different values. For instance, we still have to make a Kinsey-style inventory of what women and men, old and young, like to do, and what they find exciting. We also have to look at the evolution of sexuality, instead of constanty looking back at what has gone wrong. The commotion going on the Netherland shows that people are willing to consider evolution, but falling back into jaded pro-porn/anti-porn debates. Of course we cannot always avoid the porno fight as these are discussions that do touch us, and the ideas come close to our personal dreams, aspirations and frustations. It is a most interesting tendency that these personal sensibilities are now surfacing in the online environments. The internet offers opportunities for people from different backgrounds to look for arousing materials. One doees not have to follow mainstream taste, but one can look a for a personal touch. One does not have search according to a one-dimensional ideal, and this makes the search more confusing and exciting. Online it is not about the intention of the spectator but that of the provider, so mainstream beauty standards play a smaller role. This is a theme that we want to discuss as curators of the Click Me festival, which is about the role of Internet Pornography in formulating sexual selves and relations. If we look beyond commercial porn, we find a multi-faceted underground that is concerned with other values than satifsying fleshly lusts. Womens, queers and transgender communities may find each other in new reality body standards and playfulness. No more silocone breasts and playboyvaginas, but an environment that criticizes the mainstream heterosexual ideals of sexuality and aesthetics. Through digital networks we can reach a quirky individualism and critical-playful masses, and these are some the netporn and post-porn objectives, which are also called indieporn, altporn or DIY porn movements. These are open to women and men, and have in mind a cross-fertilization between art and porn, between queer and hetero sex. But these tendencies are to be found beyond commercial porn, and this culture has not surfaced in the Dutch debates. We look at alternative websites such a nofauxxx.com, where porn is interwoven with a positive and creative activism. This site has meanwhile been linked to many other sites, and these are social zones for people who may be sick of beauty standards or who dont care about the demands of commodity culture. These sites offer alternatives to common ways of framing the porn body and power roles and they do not start from heterosexual ideals. These were the themes of the 2005 conference Art and Politics of Netporn, organized by the Institute of Metwork Cultures in collaboration with Matteo Pasquinelli and Katrien Jacobs. It seemed to be an urgent task to host artistic and academic-activist perspectives on netporn. We deem it important to carry out this progressive porn research and to further create an international censor-free zone where porn can be discussed and shown, because we do not just want to rely on galleries and discussions in cyberspace. We want to meet in an actual space and time. The CLick me Festival will continue where Art and politics of Netporn ended, and will once again discuss alternative porn zones by inviting partcipants and experts from different backgrounds. The conclusion is that we want to look forward to these netporn circuits. If we are going back in time, lets us go back the erotic sensibilities of our (bi) curious (grand)mothers and whatever they were into in their avid masturbations or sexual affairs with others. Because it is also bout a deep sexual feeling and uge for erotica that remains constant throughout centuries of porn, despite the fluctuating media. It is about the joys of being naughty and disciplined. Because we cannot spend all our time with cranky conversation partners. Van alle kanten wordt positie van de vrouw en de rol van seksualiteit en pornografie uitgebreid bediscussieerd. In de media worden de tegenstelling zwart-wit geschetst waar door we plotseling weer in de jaren 70 zijn aanbeland. De bimbocultuur, de pornificatie van de maatschappij en de beperkte houdbaarheid van het lichaam, allemaal actuele themas die de tegenstellingen op scherp zetten. Als we de media moeten geloven ben je of fel tegen alles wat maar richting openbare sexualiteit gaat en blijft het gaan over de slachtofferpositie van de vrouw of je sexualiteit lijkt de enige mogelijkheid om je als hedendaagse vrouw sterk neer te zetten. De nuance lijkt, althans in de media, vrijwel te ontbreken. Hierdoor lijkt tot nu toe iedere (feministische) discussie omtrent het vrouwzijn in relatie pornografie niet verder gaan dan slachtofferpositie van de vrouw en de narigheid die daarbij komt kijken. Dat ze inderdaad nog altijd het object is van stereotyperingen, schoonheidseisen en een mannelijke perceptie waaraan ze wil/moet voldoen is niet te ontkennen. Maar waarom die constante nadruk op deze onderdrukte positie? Zelfs in de 21e eeuw lijkt deze onveranderd. Echter als vrouw voel je je er niet beter door. Laten we gaan kijken wat er wel interesseert is op seksueel en pornografisch gebied. Wat kan er anders en wat gaat er al anders? Want het idee dat pornografie voor vrouwen wel degelijk opwindend, interessant en zelfs seksueel versterkend kan zijn lijkt in Nederland niet aanwezig. Als vrouwen kunnen we nu ook de DIY pornocultuur letterlijk mee maken. Laten we niet terugvallen in een soort radicale angst of verborgen preutsheid. Het alternatief in Nederland komt momenteel niet verder dan de seksuele bevrijding van Marlies Dekkers en Heleen van Royen met hun boek Stout. In dit boek reduceren ze de feministische boodschap van een sterke vrouwelijke seksuele identiteit tot SBS6 formaat. Als vrouw heb je als voornaamste machtsmiddel seksualiteit en moet je stout zijn om te krijgen wat je hebben wil. Nog verder doorgevoerd kom je inderdaad terecht bij de bimbos. Wat in de discussie over het hoofd wordt gezien is dat er veel vrouwengroepen zijn die wel op zoek zijn naar een nieuwe seksualiteit die op andere waarden is gestoeld. Het is tijd om aandacht te besteden aan de pornografie die wel gaat over dingen die jongere en oudere vrouwen (en ook mannen) doen en opwindend vinden. Het is zaak om te kijken naar een vooruitgang in de seksuele ontwikkeling, in plaats van constant terug te blikken op hoe het allemaal niet moet zijn. De roering die er nu in Nederland ontstaat laat zien dat velen ermee bezig zijn en graag verder willen kijken dan het verouderd pro-porno/anti-porno debat. Natuurlijk is porno ruzie niet altijd te vermijden het is een discussie die dicht bij onze persoonlijke seksuele gevoelens aspiraties en frustraties ligt en een ieder raakt. Juist idee van het persoonlijke dat in openbaar wordt getoond, vindt online haar weg. Het internet biedt mensen van iedere achtergrond de mogelijkheid om juist te kijken naar datgene dat haar (en hem) persoonlijk seksueel opwindt. Je hoeft het ideaal van de massa niet te volgen, maar juist op zoek te gaan wat voor jezelf opwindend is. Er bestaat geen eendimensionaal ideaal waar je aan moet voldoen, wat het verwarrend en spannend tegelijk maakt. Het gaat online niet meer om de intentie van de kijker, maar om de intentie van de aanbieder, de mainstream schoonheid speelt hier geen rol meer. Een onderwerp wat wij als producenten en curatoren van het Click Me festival onder de aandacht willen krijgen. Tijdens dit festival gaat het over de rol van internet pornografie als stimulator in het vormgeven van seksuele relaties en identiteiten. Want voorbij de commerciële pornografie is een onderstroom te vinden waarin meer gebeurd dan enkel het bevredigen van de vleselijke lusten. Vrouwen, queers, transgenders vinden elkaar in pornografische gemeenschappen waar het realiteit en speelsheid voorop staan. Geen blonde siliconenborsten of playboyvaginas maar een omgeving waar voorbij wordt gegaan aan het dominante heteroseksuele ideaal van seksualiteit en esthetiek. Het internet biedt de mogelijkheid om zowel een kritisch-speelse massa als het individu te bereiken en dit aspect wordt aangegrepen door de aanhangers van de netporn en post porn bewegingen, die vaak worden beschreven als indie porn, alt porn or DIY pornografie. Deze bewegingen staan open voor vrouwen en mannen, ook zijn ze nu sterk bezig met een nieuwe banden tussen kunst en pornografie, en tussen heteroseksuele and homoseksuele of queer tendensen. Wat krijg je als voorbij gaat aan de commerciële porno? Dat is de vraag die ze zich stellen en die in Nederland in de meeste gevallen onbeantwoord blijft. Wat ontstaat er in de wereld voorbij de objectivering van het lichaam. Dan betreedt je een gebied wat ruimte biedt voor die andere blik. Amerikaanse websites als www.nofauxxx.com koppelen hun pornografische content aan een positieve, creatieve en activistische houding en bieden daarmee het verfrissend alternatief. Inmiddels is er een kruisbestuiving ontstaan tussen deze website en vele andere alternatieve netporn sites. Deze online gemeenschappen brengen mensen samen die voorbij willen gaan aan dat dominante schoonheidsideaal, voorbij aan de dwingende eisen van de huidige beeldcultuur. Vaststaande kaders en machtspatronen worden op deze plekken aan de kaak gesteld in een omgeving waar de heteroseksuele norm allang niet meer aan de orde is. Deze tendensen waren onder andere de aanleiding voor het Instituut voor Netwerkculturen, Katrien Jacobs en Matteo Pasquinelli om in 2005 het The Art & Politics of Netporn congres te organiseren. Dit congres, dat werd georganiseerd om de wetenschappelijke en artistieke ontwikkelingen een plek te geven, bleek broodnodig. Vanuit veel verschillende hoeken houden academici, kunstenaars en activisten zich bezig met de sociale ontwikkelingen online en de ontwikkelingen en voortgang kwamen tijdens dit congres aan bod. Het is belangrijk om dit vooruitstrevend onderzoek omtrent pornografie verder uit werken, en om een een publieke en internationale cultuur zone te creeen waar pornografie en porn art getoond kunnen worden. Want we willen graag iets verder gaan dan discussies en gallerijen op het Internet. Het komende Click Me netporn festival op 2 juni in Paradiso zal verdergaan waar het eerste congres is opgehouden. Dit festival zal nogmaals de alternative netporno-ambiance en ook kritiek aanmoedigen uit verschillende hoeken van de maatschappij. Onze conclusie is dat we vooruit willen kijken naar de alternatieven die het internet ons biedt. Terug naar het erotische zelfbewustzijn van de (groot)moeders, de vrouwen die toen al nieuwsgierig waren en die hun seksueel genot wilden waar maken met zichzelf en anderen. Het gaat om het diepe seksuele gevoel dat steeds aanwezig blijft door de eeuwen van pornografie, de emoties van stoute en brave verlangens en het bijbehorende genot. Want we kunnen niet al onze tijd besteden aan slechtgehumeurde gesprekspartners.
