We
are attaching photographs of the devastated Health Center in Kosovo
Polje, the only hospital facility where the remaining Serbs in the
Kosovo Polje area were able to receive medical treatment. After June
1999 this Health Center was run jointly by Serbian physicians and
members of Russian KFOR medical staff. This was the only facility
anywhere in central Kosovo where, besides Serbs, Albanians and
members of other national communities could receive medical
treatment. On the night of March 17, 2004 one part of the building
was completely destroyed by a fire started by the Albanian mob. The
flames almost spread to a nearby apartment house where all Serb
owned apartments were usurped by Albanians long ago. Hospital
equipment from the Health Center was demolished and looted. The
second row of pictures shows two of several dozen burned Serb houses
in Kosovo Polje and Bresje, as well as a destroyed ambulance in
front of the Health Center. The new Serbian school, St. Sava,
located immediately next to the Health Center was also burned, as
was the post office - the only post office in central Kosovo where
Serbs could regularly receive parcels and letters - a few hundred
meters away. At the same time, vandals broke into the church of St.
Nicholas on the main street and set fire to its interior. According
to information received, the Albanians also managed to break into
the church of St. Catherine opposite the Health Center, and to loot
and demolish it, too. Although the church building appears intact
from outside the inside of the church is completely devastated. The
pogrom of March 17-18 completely destroyed the last vestiges of
Serbs in Kosovo Polje. Serbs are still living on in the nearby
village of Ugljare and one part of Bresje.
