?With the practical experience I have had over the years I thought it may help
the discussion to give my views on the problem of positioning the lower keys
once you start to extend the range downwards. Even what you may call the
standard 17 key that was developed by Reid had an either-or position of the C#
and D# keys and then when Clough added the low A key it was open season for
where keys could be placed. I have tried to rationalise the positions as you
know recently as described in the last issue of the Magazine and it does make
it difficult as a teacher to help students on how to play the lower keys
effectively.
Some folk, including our President, look upon this key position changing as
heresy but you have to go with what players want within reason.

Dear Liist Members,
I thought you might be interested in the reply I gave to Helen re the key
positions with the personal bits taken out. It can be confusing talking about
key positions without diagrams so I hope any discussion can be as clear as
possible.
