Dear Searchers, I have received wonderful help from many other posters to this board. The help I've received has been invaluable and truly encouraged me to continue my search. But today I come with a question regarding the Nova Scotia Genealogical Society. Does anyone have any insight they can share on how to receive help from this organization long distance. About six months ago after visiting the website, I contacted the organization to see what records they had on file for the surname "Guy(e)." Someone took my information and said she'd get back in touch with me. A week passed and I called again and was told that it was a busy time and I should try back at another time. I waited several months before making another call and was told that she didn't know when she be able to get to my request.
Now I wasn't looking for anyone to do any free or convoluted research for me. I just wanted to know if any records existed for the last name Guy. As luck would have it I was planning a trip to a french language immersion program in Trios-Pistoles and if there had been records could have taken the train over to Nova Scotia at the conclusion of the program and done some research on my own. Getting to that part of Canada from Washington DC is a rather long trip. One that I may not be able to make again for some time. After my second call it just seemed like I was a nuisance to whoever answered the call and of whom I made the request for help. Is it some unwritten policy that these organization expect to be paid for providing the most basic of information? Should I have offered some payment? Is what I was asking not so basic? There are certainly some other conclusions I can come to--as an African-American looking for genealogical records. As I have traveled through North Carolina looking for records and been turned away at several registrar of deeds offices, being told that there were no records pertaining to slaves or slave ownership. But insistence and determination won out and records pertaining to both were found. Any insight into how to handle this situation would be appreciated. -- The Sunny James Show The Small Voice in the Nation's Capital Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
