Hi Rosie, Just a caution -- you need to be careful about saying things like "it is not in the online files". Sometimes the transcriptions which appear in the search index can be quite badly mistaken (i.e. weird spellings, etc.). When I referred in an earlier message to 'patient searching' I was thinking especially of trying many spelling variants, and also close examination of many entries which might not quite match your expectations for the date, or place, for that matter.
Furthermore there are cases which have turned up (including my own grandmother, till I got it corrected) where a particular record was interchanged with another -- i.e. my grandmother's second marriage appeared under the names of an entirely different couple altogether. It is also quite true, especially for the time period you're interested in, that there are many events which apparently did not get registered with the government and so do not appear in this database. You should also read the "Background" page on the NSHVS site, https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/Background.aspx My understanding is that one of the reasons for the major gap in Nova Scotia records in the latter part of the nineteenth century was a lack of funding support from the federal government. Deaths in the City of Halifax (as opposed to Halifax County, or the rest of Nova Scotia) are included for the period 1890 - 1908 (see "Death Registrations in the sidebar at the NSHVS site). When you say that your grandparents were born in Halifax, NS, do you know whether this means specifically the *City* of Halifax, or could it just be somewhere in Halifax County? You asked about the Halifax Herald CD -- that only covers obituaries from about 1961 through 1999. The only way I know to search the newspapers for the earlier periods is to (painfully!) search the microfilmed versions of the paper. Hope this helps to answer some of your questions.
