A good reason to plan a trip to 'The Valley' OFFICIAL UNVEILING - 4 August
Practically everyone with roots in and around the Bay of Fundy and South West Nova Scotia has ancestral connections to the New England Planters. See: http://www.planter2010.com/* * This year marks the 250th anniversary of their arrival in present day Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The official unveiling by Canada Post of the new cancellation stamp celebrating this important event in our history will be held at 10 a.m., August 4th 2010 at the Kings County Museum, 27 Cornwallis Street, Kentville, NS. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP Genevieve Latour of Canada Post <genevieve.lat...@canadapost.postecanada.ca> by 29 July 2010. This Cancellation stamp will also be in use at the Newport Post Office, Brooklyn, Hants Co. (Newport Township). **SUNSET CEREMONY 24 July On July 24^th Fort Edward National Historic Site will once again experience the sounds of the 84^th Regiment, 2^nd Battalion. The relationship between the 84th Regiment (previously known as the Young Royal Highlanders or Royal Highland Emigrants) and Fort Edward in Windsor began with the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775 and remained constant until the war's end in 1783. The final chapter in the long-time relationship was written when most of the Battalion was reunited at Fort Edward in 1783. On October 10th the men were given their discharges from the army and the regiment was disbanded. For many, Fort Edward had been home for years, and for others, a respite following two years of fighting in far-away South Carolina. For those who did settle their lands in Douglas Township, the fort was never more than a day's march away. This year on July 24^th , as part of Parks Canada's celebrations marking the 125^th anniversary of the establishment of Banff as Canada's first national park, Fort Edward will once again see the 84th Regiment for a special Sunset Ceremony. The event is set to commence at 4:45 pm and will include military drills, and demonstrations of black powder. Visitors will be able to learn about the lives of the soldiers, as well as their families who will join them in period costume for this special ceremony to lower the flag at the close of the day for Fort Edward. A fife player will play "God Save the King" in a ceremony to lower the flag for the evening, as may have been done more than 200 years ago, when the 84^th was garrisoned at Fort Edward. Fort Edward National Historic Site is operated every summer for Parks Canada by the West Hants Historical Society, and we join together to welcome you to this unique event. This re-enactment will conclude the Regiment's visit in Windsor where they will hold an encampment at Kings Edgehill school during the British Motoring Society's display of British automobiles. Hope to see you there! John John D. Wilson Windsor, NS ___________________________________________ nsroots mailing list nsroots@ednet.ns.ca http://mailman.ednet.ns.ca/cgi-bin/listinfo/nsroots
