Hello fellow researchers, I am forwarding this email as this lady has a request; (Mairi Ross in ON) to see if there is any further research that anyone can comment on regarding the Ross family, perhaps additional family members, siblings etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated by her. Thank you Irene Schofield
This is what she has so far... Florence S. Chisholm and Herman J. Jamieson marriage is recorded with the Province August 1, 1914 in Pictou, NS. Florence S. Chisholm parents are listed as Daniel and Christina Chisholm of Westville; Daniel is listed as in mining. Herman parents are listed as James and Margaret Jamieson of Canso. Both Florence Chisholm and Herman Jamieson's age on the marriage record written as 36 years of age at the time of their marriage. This would mean that both were born about 1878. Herman died on August 4, 1949 in Halifax, his address is listed as Vernon St., on his death certificate it states that he was actual born on Sept. 23, 1879 in Canso. He died at age 69 years of age. His nationality is Irish and was Canadian. His wife was still alive at this time. Mairi is the daughter of Florence Jamieson, who was the d/o Florence Chisholm (Westville) and Herman Jamieson (Canso) and Mairi's father was Charles Edward Ross, the s/o John (Jack) Ross and Mary Jane Lawrence. Mairi has tried to research her paternal grandmother's side. She doesn't know if there was a name change. She is unable to find Lawrence, only Laurent. Maybe they didn't belong to that parish in L'Ardoise. My grandfather's name was likely John, but my father would refer to him as Jack. He married Mary Jane Lawrence who I believe was from L'Ardoise. She died at the age of 51 or 53. Jack and Mary had 5 children: 1) John, the eldest, my father, 2) Charles 3) Margaret 4) Mary 5) Wallace was an infant son, Wallace, who died at the age of 2 Florence Jamieson died last year at the age of 92 years. Charles Edward Ross, who grew up in Halifax died August 14, 1974. He was never much into family things his birthday was Sept.22 1911. But I am not sure of the date because he used to change all the time so that people would think he was younger....Florence Jamieson and Charles Edward Ross married on June 19, 1948. Charles is buried St. George Church, Georgeville Cemetery, Antigonish. Mairi's maternal grandparents spent some time in Port Hawkesbury and later came to live in Halifax. There were 6 girls in that family. Only one remains. Mairi lives in Hagersville, Ontario, a community which is southwest of Hamilton. To my knowledge, of my father's family, there is only one surviving member, Mary (Ross) Taggart. John Ross (brother to my father) lived his life in Halifax. The Ross family lived in Halifax, but I remember my father telling me that he would be taken to stay in L'Ardoise with Uncle Placide, who had a farm. Many members of the family are buried in Fairview Cemetery. Because my grandmother was Catholic, she was buried in Mount Olivet. I believe that my great grandfather was "Sandy" or Alexander. I have a Family portrait of 3 generations of the Ross' men-the boys in typical Scottish dress. Great grandfather had had a stroke and is seated in a wheelchair. It is an amazing photo. My grandfather may have had hot houses. I am given to understand that he and my grandmother were chefs. I have a very old cookbook that belonged to them that they would have perhaps used. Either my great grandfather or great-great grandfather apparently came over from Scotland with Samuel Canard and Alexander Keith and were known to be good friends. I heard that someone in that family had done design work in the public gardens. I don't know where my grandfather was born; I believe he had brothers, maybe a sister. At one time they lived on Lemarchant St., Halifax. Later, he build a house in Spryfield which later burned down. My father's brother was John Ross, who was very prominent in the Masonic order. I know that my father had a favorite cousin-Gordon. I remember hearing the name of Beatrice who may have been married to my grandfather's brother. I did not have the good fortune to know either sets of grandparents. I am an only child and family is important to me. I would like to have some greater sense of my family history than what I have now. I had dates written down somewhere of deaths, etc. but for the life of me cannot put my hand to them-of course.
