Around 7 PM I walked around the swan River preserve in east Patchogue. Small
birds were absent aside from chirping cardinals and the always present song
birds.

A bit of pond watching turned up some mallards, the resident swan (still with a
fishing hook / line attached) and great blue heron. Somewhat unexpected was a
solitary sandpiper (though I've been seeing them there regularly) and a green
heron working the inside of the pond. Also spotted was a sizeable snapping
turtle beneath the bridge.
