Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

A young Red-headed Woodpecker has continued in the area just west of East 68th Street (south of a park entrance at East 69th), gaining some hints of coIor in parts of its' "hood" recentIy, and hanging tough against the starIngs or any other birds that it deems as harassers or competitors. The Red-headed often can be seen in the vicinity of, or on, a Shagbark Hickory that is close to the first path parallel with, and immediately west of Fifth Avenue. In its stay here, this woodpecker has been observed by many hundreds of birders by now. It is also vocal at times.

Other birds that have continued as well thru the winter so far include Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Yellow-shafted Flickers, Carolina Wren, Winter Wren, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Brown Creeper, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Eastern Towhees, Swamp Sparrows, Red Fox Sparrows, and some of the ducks at The Pond (in particular) with drakes of Northern Pintail, Wood Duck, & a sometimes elusive Green-winged Teal there, as well (in other water-bodies) as Northern Shovelers, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, & various other species.

good birding,
