Greetings: This is the Syracuse Rare Bird Alert for the week of August 14, 2017.

Montezuma National Wildlife Complex (MNWC) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex 
(MWC)------------
     A great week for shorebirds. 18 species were reported at the complex with 
most being seen Saturday and Sunday. Viewing Knox-Marsellus Marsh from East 
Road was where a majority of the birds were reported. Highlights were both 
Dowitchers, Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone, Wilson’s Phalarope, Red-necked 
Phalarope and Black-bellied Plover.     8/19: 15 species of Shorebirds were 
seen at Knox-Marsellus Pool including 3 WILSON’S PHALAROPES and a RED-NECKED 
PHALAROPE.     8/20: 14 species of Shorebirds were reported from 
Knox-Marsellus. Both Phalarope species were still present. A DICKCISSEL, a 
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a LEAST BITTERN were all  seen near 
Knox-Marsellus Pool. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER continues at the buildings on 
Carncross Road. 4 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue on Mays Point Pool Road.

Onondaga County------------
     8/15: A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Raddison River Park 
(private) along the seneca River south of Phoenix. 6 species of Shorebirds  
including 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen at Jamesville Beach.     8/16: 4 
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. More 
Nighthawks were observed on the 17th. from the same location.

Oswego County------------
     8/14: A LEAST BITTERN was seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet.       8/18: 6 
shorebird species including a RED KNOT and a RUDDY TURNSTONE were seen at the 
south spit of Sandy Pond. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen also.     8/20: 
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was reported from a private residence in New Haven.

Madison County------------
     8/14: An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at Woodman Pond north of Hamilton.

Oneida County------------
     8/15: 4 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were again seen at the north end of Forest 
Ave. in Verona Beach State Park.     8/16: An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen 
on the Black River Canal Trail in Boonville.     8/18: 3 adult LITTLE GULLS in 
non breeding plumage were seen at Sylvan Beach.

Herkimer County------------
     8/16: A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen at Moss Lake north of Eagle Bay.     
8/18: A RED-CROSSBILL was reported at Sunday Lake near Stillwater Reservoir.    
 8/20: A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen in the village of Mohawk.
