My understanding was that all I needed to do to copyright something I've written was to add a copyright declaration, containing the date and the name of the person who owns the copyright. Something like: (C) Copyright David Shepheard March 2005 So where have I got this wrong? Is adding this sort of statement actually a "registration" or are you saying that declaration of copyright is not sufficient to gain protection? I know that there is some international dispute over the copyright symbol, with some countries saying that you do must include it and others saying that you don't. I've even heard some people say that in *their* country copyright of all published material (including things like letters) is automatic and that declaration of copyright is just a formality unless international protection is needed.
