I have had similar problems. There is a non-repeatability in the problems on my machine. I have had the CD drive sometimes show up on the SCSI bus and sometimes not. It was an original Apple drive (made by I forget whom) and then I replaced it with another drive from the same era and had similar trouble. For a while I thought the trouble was with the SCSI cable and or connector since unplugging and replugging it sometimes seemed to solve it, but at other times no luck. THen I found that under MacOS, it will always see the drive if I try to boot from the drive at start up even if there is not a bootable CD in there (but if no CD is present or I do not hold down c, I can only rarely see the drive.) I succeeded in installing Yellow Dog Linux a few times, but since then I have found that the CD drive does not show up in Linux no matter what I try, but continues to show up in Mac OS if I try to boot from a CD in the drive. I have been unable to reinstall linux (or add anything to it from the CD) ever since. I have been reduced to installing the hard drive in an 8500, doing the install, and then switching the hard drive back. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd like to hear them!

PS> Oh, maybe this is obvious, but you cannot necessarily use an OS9 CD that came from a newer machine, like a G4 for example. Mine won't boot that way, but it will consistently boot from an appropriate Mac OS CD.

hey has anyone had a power mac 9500 not want to boot off of a cd, i would
like to install linux on this machine, but first want to install os9 on this
machine, and i insert my os9 cd hold down the c button, and yet it just sits
at the happy mac face
Thanks
