Hello... My PM8500 is slowly killing me, guys. Ive spend tens of hours in front of it and only result was a pile of my plucked hair :o)
Fact: whenever I make a clean install of OS8.5 or 9.1, everything works fine unless I try to install anything or even run some application (eg. AppleWorks6 etc...). Program keeps running and no problems in sight, but as soon as I reboot I get (of course when loading extensions :o) "illegal instruction" or "error 10" message. Well, I reboot again, holding shift key but it busts me with "bus error" message. I developed a sort of cure (a desperate one): I keep backup copy of my freshly installed System folder and everytime this happens (all the time) I boot from MacOS install CD, delete the recent System Folder, replace it with the backup version of fresh-after-install System Folder, reboot and MacOS starts perfectly. And it goes on and on. Ive made several clean installs, I zap PRAM all the time like lunatic, even switching the PRAM battery with that from my other Mac, still nothing. My theory: when running application which writes down ANYTHING (even a preference settings) to System folder, something goes wrong and the System folder is no longer consistent. Applications which dont touch the System folder seem to work well (like WinAMP, some games etc.) and cause no troubles. Few weeks ago I thought, ok, install the Linux and get a rid of these mind-freaking episodes but on 8500 you have to install BootX (to be able to boot YDL) and its extension is written into (guess where :o) : System folder! Piece of cake, eh? ;-) Any help or advice will be appreciated. My config: plain, non-upgraded pm8500/120,192MB RAM,2+1GB HDD,CD-ROM.
