Finally able to get back to this after a couple of days on other projects. Pulled the RAM I do get the breaking glass sound... soooo, what does that mean? :) Guessing it just means that the motherboard is essentially OK...?
I've tried running the system with only one pair of DIMMs, thinking that the memory check might be either taking an inordinately long time or locking the system on a bad chip, but no dice. I've tried several different pairs too. An extensive PRAM reset is next on the agenda.
