THE CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS MEDIA COMMUNIQUE Dec 2, 2006 CICPAC CONGRATULATES STEPHANE DION FOR LIBERAL LEADERSHIP VICTORY -- LEADING CANDIDATES ADDRESSED MUSLIM DELEGATES AT CICPAC HALAL BREAKFAST MEETING TODAY MONTREAL (December 2, 2006) -- The Canadian Islamic Congress Political Action Committee issued congratulations here today to newly elected federal Liberal Party leader, Stéphane Dion, for a well-deserved victory. Earlier today (Saturday morning), the four leading candidates addressed Muslim Liberal delegates at one of several Halal breakfast meetings hosted during the Montréal convention by the Canadian Islamic Congress. The convention drew an estimated 300 Muslim delegates from all regions of Canada. During November, CICPAC had ranked leadership candidates Gerard Kennedy and Stéphane Dion a very close as the most-desirable potential winners, based on their track records and positions on a number of vital national and international issues. Afghanistan came out on top as both the national and international issue of most concern to the majority of Canadians. Other issues of concern included the erosion of Canadians' civil liberties, the state of the national economy, Canada's environmental track record, the Middle East peace process and Canada-U.S. relations. In the same report card, candidates Bob Rae and Michael Ignatieff were both ranked, respectively, behind Kennedy and Dion. "This is a good day for Canada and a good day for democracy," the CICPAC statement said. "We congratulate Professor Dion, a man of great integrity whose first love is for Canada as a united country. He has shown himself to be a loyal and committed Liberal party member, as well as a true small-l liberal." This the fourth time in recent years that CICPAC has issued a report card on candidates running for political office. It researched and issued similar gradings prior to the last two federal elections and another during campaigning for Novembers hotly contested seat of London-North-Centre, in London, Ontario. "We look forward to working with Mr. Dion for the common good of all of Canada," today's CICPAC statement concluded.
