GAUL 0.1846 - Now for Windows!
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=305677

San Diego, CA, August 27, 2003 -- The GAUL project announces the latest
release of GAUL(TM) - the Genetic Algorithm Utility Library, a leading
open-source programming library for evolutionary computation. GAUL
0.1846 contains significant enhancements to its features and usability.
This is the first version to officially support the MS Windows
environment, in addition to the prior supported UNIX and UNIX-like
operating systems. An already impressive set of features are further
enhanced by the new version of GAUL. Support for the MS Windows
platform bolsters a long-time aim of the GAUL project to create a
robust and portable framework for evolutionary algorithms. "Development
of a native Windows version of GAUL is a major milestone," says Stewart
Adcock, Lead Developer of the GAUL project. "Programmers requiring a
feature-complete, but portable, framework for evolutionary computation
now have the open-source GAUL as a viable option." GAUL is already
applied in many important domains, including protein structure
prediction and drug discovery. With release of this new version, GAUL
becomes available to a larger community of research scientists and
software developers. About GAUL: The Genetic Algorithm Utility Library
(or, GAUL for short) is an OSI certified programming library for
evolutionary computation. It is a copyrighted work released under the
terms of the GNU General Public License. GAUL is deployed in several
institutions and corporations, on hardware ranging from low-end desktop
PCs through to top 500 supercomputers, in North America, Europe and
Japan. Further information is available on the GAUL website at
    http://gaul.sourceforge.net.

Slashdot
Microsoft Introduces IM Licensing
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/31/0059234

[0]prostoalex writes "The [1]MSN Messenger ban of outside clients and
cited security issues might be explained by yet another Microsoft move.
The company's Internet unit, MSN, [2]contacted third-party providers
like Trillian and Odigo with a suggestion to buy access licenses. From
the ZDNet article: 'Running an (IM) network is expensive,' said Lisa
Gurry, group product manager for MSN at Microsoft. 'We can't sustain
multiple other people's businesses, particularly if they charge for
certain versions of their software. We're introducing licensing
processes for third parties like Trillian.'"

Nordic Countries to Promote Open Source
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/31/0128252

Nordic Avenger writes "The Nordic countries have launched a website to
promote open source software to consumers and small businesses. People
can submit open source software links as well as exchange information
in the forums section. As the website states: '[0]Nordicos.org is a
project of the [1]Nordic Ministerial Council, and addresses the need
for a comprehensive overview of open source software available for
consumers'. Now, anybody eager to make good suggestions about software
that normal people could find useful and live happily ever after in the
    open source world?"

Microsoft vs. Burst.com
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/198214

[0]rocketjam writes "Robert X. Cringley has an interesting story on one
of Microsoft's many little-known legal cases. Burst.com is suing
Microsoft, claiming [1]MS negotiated in bad faith for over a year
before stealing Burst's patented technology for increasing the
efficiency of video and audio streaming. After Microsoft submitted all
emails associated with the their dealings with Burst to the court,
Burst's lawyers discovered a 35-week gap of missing mail during a
critical portion of the negotiations. When the judge learned the Sun
vs. Microsoft antitrust case had revealed that MS keeps backups of all
emails on over 100,000 tapes stored offsite, he ordered them to come up
    with the missing messages."

2003 Seattle Wireless Field Day
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/1857246

[0]propellerhead writes "Today is [1]2003 Wireless Field Day for
Seattle Wireless. 'Similar to amateur radio field day, a mock emergency
network will be created this summer using off-the-shelf 802.11b
hardware, computers, and battery/gas power supplies. Network
applications such as VoIP (Voice over IP or Internet Telephony),
streaming audio and video, file sharing, chat, network games, and
others will be implemented across a multi-hop wireless infrastructure.
If resources allow, the goal is to connect this mobile network to the
existing Seattle Wireless network, which currently exists in the
Seattle area. This network can also provide access to the internet and
our community network partners like Seattle Pacific University and
    Council House Projects.'"

Virginia Tech to Build Top 5 Supercomputer?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/1838222

[0]hype7 writes "ThinkSecret is running [1]a story which might explain
exactly why the Dual 2GHz G5 machines [2]have been delayed to the
customers that ordered them minutes after the keynote was delivered.
Apparently, Virginia Tech has plans to build a G5 cluster of 1100
units. If it manages to complete the cluster before the cut-off date,
it will score a Top 5 rank in the [3]Linpack Top 500 Supercomputer
List. Both Apple and the University are playing mum on the issue, but
there's talk of it all over the campus."

Dotgnu Coding Competition
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/1722212

Honestly writes "Apparently [0]DotGNU seems to be offering more than
the 'warm fuzzy feeling' to its contributors. Somebody has funded about
$4500 worth of prizes for code contributions. The developers have
confirmed that the $$$ is in FSF Hands (good hands, I suppose). Here is
the [1]split up of prizes. It's almost strange to earn money writing
open source. Especially when you're not even employed by dotgnu. Anyway
all I can say is ,I like it. It's ideal for a grad student with lots of
free time. But hardly anyone seems to have seen the [2]Newsforge posts

InfoWorld on Switching to Linux
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/178254

[0]brentlaminack writes "The latest [1]Infoworld is running a lengthy
piece about [2] The Real Cost of Switching to Linux, where it makes
sense and where it doesn't. As one of their [3]columnists points out,
the debate has switched from "if" to "where". One of the big wins for
Linux was in the area of remote administration. Specifically noted was
ssh. Also of note is the shift in calculating cost from TCO (Total Cost
of Ownership) as has been calculated in the past, to ROI (Return on
Investment) that focuses more on what you can do with the technology to
    get work done."

MIT Roofnet
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/29/2320228

[0]prostoalex writes "[1]MIT Technology Review runs a story about MIT
Computer science students [2]building their own mesh network for
Internet access: 'A few weeks ago, MIT graduate student Shan Sinha
canceled his broadband Internet service. Now his Net connection comes
through the chimney. From a computer in the living room of his
Cambridge, MA, apartment, a few blocks from the MIT campus, a cable
goes into the fireplace up to the roof, where it is attached to an
antenna. From there, data packets hop to another roof-mounted antenna
at a nearby student's apartment. That way, from roof to roof in
multiple hops, Sinha's data packets finally reach a gateway--a computer
connected to the fixed Internet--at MIT's computer science building.'"

Xr Renamed to Cairo
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/1514245

[0]Charles Goodwin writes "Xr, the vector graphics extension for
XFree86 that Keith Packard, Carl Worth, and a few others have been hard
at work on, has been [1] renamed and is now officially called [2]Cairo.
Keith and Carl recently gave a [3]detailed presentation on Cairo (then
known as Xr) which should be a useful read for those wishing to
understand it a little better. There is already a useful [4]Gtk+
rendering backend that uses Cairo, as well as an [5]SVG test suite.
This, along with Gnome2's subtle adoption of SVG and the inception of
[6]Xouvert (which now has goals for both the [7] short term and [8]long
term, and an [9]initial plan which includes coexisting with XFree86),

are included in the project). Using the pipe option you can debug over
the network or any other communication medium. It can load many
executable formats such as ELF, and display and follow the original
source even from multiple source file programs. There is support for
breakpoints and watchpoints which can trap on specific data (such as
loading or executing specific instructions). Support for other features
such as FPGA's is also available, allowing loading or any control
required to drive a specific hardware device. The project uses chump to
allow disassembly and line assembly. Chump also allows new
architectures to be easily added without the need to recompile the
system. Communication with the backend is done using two pipes/fifos
using a simple set of codes. Back end communication program can be
created using very little memory on the target device.

mooix 1.0rc4
http://freshmeat.net/releases/134304/

Mooix is a multiuser object-oriented dimension (a MOO) layered over top
of your favorite Unix system. To the user, mooix looks much like any
other MOO. To the programmer, mooix objects look like directories full
of files: executable methods, properties, and links to other objects.
MOOs have historically had poor support for such things as real
programming languages, encrypted logins, multitasking, and editors.
Mooix inherits all of these things from the Unix system it is based on.
At the same time, it's not wedded too tightly to Unix (e.g., it
implements its own permissions system that is much more suited to a MOO
environment than the historical Unix system).

http://freshmeat.net/releases/134306/

MozPlugger is a modification of Plugger, a very small multimedia plugin
for the Unix versions of Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera which uses

several file formats commonly used in the GNOME environment. When used
with the Nautilus file manager, for example, icons for PDF files will
present the same appearance as the document itself. This has long been
the case with images, but this package extends this technique to
formats like PDF, PostScript, and GIMP XCF.

Urbana-Champaign. The client program included emulates the look and
feel of Notesfiles, and the UIUC backend is compatible with Notesfiles
data files. Future versions of Newts will include a separate daemon to

traffic and visitor behaviour. It features a logging engine that,
either invoked as a Web bug by an HTML image tag or embedded with two
lines of code into your PHP application, logs each request to a Web
site into a database. One installation can track an arbitrary number of
Web sites. Through its API, you can easily access the gathered data and
perform complex operations on it (for instance, the analysis of your
    visitors' click paths).

Timeless Meaning 1.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/134257/

Timeless Meaning is a Java library that supports schema evolution for
rapid development. Information stored in an application is encoded as a
series of method calls written with method names that are meaningful
sentences. The method calls are serialized to create a data dump and
then deserialized to reload the data dump into a new version of the
application. The semantics of the data dump are grounded in natural
language, which makes upgrading relatively painless and robust.

change playback speeds (slow motion/acceleration), set looptypes, and
set markers. With both samples and tags, you can edit the effect chain
and mix from multiple sources to one. Veejay has 50+ video effects and
many frame blending methods. "Gveejay", a graphical

Slashcode
How to Allow Longer Subjects?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/30/1923252

An anonymous reader asks: "By default there is a limit on how long a
poster's subject can be. Is there a way to get beyond this limitation,
so that the subject lines for comments and stories can be longer?"
Sure, it's easy... this is a good introduction to using MySQL to
    customize Slash.

Slash on Mac OS X
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/12/158239

This is how I installed Slash on Mac OS X Server 10.2.6 on August 8,
2003. YMMV. This is not intended to be a tutorial, it is a log of what
I did for my system. You may wish to use a release version of perl, to
include different Apache modules, to compile with DSO, etc. Whatever.
If someone wants to take some or all of this information and include it
in a more comprehensive guide, be my guest.

How to Force Previewing?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/08/1931216

An anonymous user writes: "I'd like to see an option added to enable a
user to force themselves to preview a post before they actually post
the comment. At the moment, a user is required to preview a story
submission before they post it, but there is no way for this
requirement to be there for standard posts. I often find myself hitting
'submit' when I wish I'd previewed first. I know that a 'force post
preview' option could be added to the options section and implemented
in SLASH *very* easily, which would simply remove the 'Submit' button
from the initial post screen... so could someone do it? I'd do it
myself if I was able to update the CVS source :-)" This is a one-liner
    change... details follow...

csdaily.com
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/28/0337226

Yet another Slash site, Computer Science Daily News. Aims to be a
resource for Computer Science professionals, researchers, students and
instructors. Hopefully this fills a niche, computer science
developments seem to be very decentralized, and hard to find. Slash
seems to be working out nicely, though I'm still learning the ropes...

Slash on server running Livejournal?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/24/0035257

Maybe this is the wrong venue to ask in, and I'm sorry if it is, but
this question has been nagging me for about the past week or so. I have
a personal server running Slackware 8 with a custom-compiled Apache
1.3.27 (with the appropriate mod_perl) and MySQL 4.0.13. This server is
currently running the LiveJournal server code and works quite well at
this. I'm interested in attempting to set up slash for personal use
(the Livejournal code is running for personal use as well), and herein
lies the question. Can slash be run on the same server in another
VirtualHost without having a separate apache installation/process and
doing some fancy trick with mod_rewrite? Or am I asking too much? I
will be happy to provide any further info anyone needs through e-mail
(the e-mail link above is NOT spam-armored at all).

Tuxedo.org Now running Slashcode
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/23/2014232

Tuxedo.org is now running Slashcode. I should have done this a couple
of years ago... Most recent story is Linus Torvalds Comments on SCO
Lawsuit and Linux. Hope you all enjoy the new site! --Chuck Peters

Best hosting service for Slash?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/23/1449209

I'm going to be doing some "big things" with Slashcode but am
interested in going through someone to set up Slashcode and the server,
so that I can just right in and start building the site. What are the
best hosting services out there? Will they set up Slash for me? What
kinds of experiences have people had?

Dissociated Press goes Slash
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/23/1442252

After a bit of poking and prodding, I've converted Dissociated Press to
    Slashcode (2.2.6). Works great!
