LONDON: Britain's security agencies were on Sunday facing accusations of intelligence failure after it reportedly emerged that two of the four alleged suicide bombers behind last week's London bombings were known to have aroused suspicion in the past but remained undetected in the run-up to the July 7 attacks. Media reports said that Mohammed Siddique Khan, who blew himself up at Edgware Road station, was "scrutinised'' by MI5 last year after his name surfaced during investigations into an alleged terror plot. But after a "quick assessment'', the agency decided that he did not pose a security threat and was not pursued, one newspaper claimed. "As a result, MI5 failed to put him under surveillance and his plans to become a suicide bomber remained undetected,'' The Sunday Times said. Known to officials American intelligence sources were reported as saying that a Pakistani Al-Qaeda suspect, Mohammed Junaid Babar, had identified Khan from photographs of the four alleged bombers shown to him. Babar, a computer expert, is in U.S. custody for a string of alleged terrorist charges. Khan's parents said in a statement that their son "may have been brainwashed into carrying out such an atrocity''. The second alleged bomber, believed to have been known to British and U.S. intelligence agencies, was Germaine or Jamal Lindsay, a Jamaican-born Briton. He was reported to have been on a security "watchlist'' but was not pursued. Speculation is rife that the four "bombers'' may have been "duped'' into believing that their mission was only to plant the bombs - and not to blow themselves up. They may have been led to think that the bombs were timed to go off after they had fled the scene. The speculation follows reports that all four bought return train tickets at Luton station, where they boarded a train to Kings' Cross.
