Yes you can just set the aperture and let the camera set the shutter. It will be at the taking aperture (stopped down) though, as I believe this is a manual aperture lens, correct? Also, you'll have fun striking the best combination of f-stop and shutter speed. With the tripod you can go further down (slower) with the shutter speed, obviously. I recommend a cable release, in fact I keep one in my lens case. As for your tripod, I am still stuck in the dark ages with a Tilt-All and am not familiar with the one you cited. Mainly, if it will support the weight and does not wiggle around when the wind blows, you should be OK - the lens tripod collar position is chosen for balancing the weight of camera and lens so in terms of that, the tripod head need only be moderately large. You don't ever want to mount that combination using the tripod hole in the base of the camera unless you have TWO tripods and mount camera to one and lens to another. FWIW Paul M. I really wanted more reach but couldn't afford the A*400 But you will want to break out that nice sturdy tripod. I have the bogden/manfrotto 055C Tripod with the Bogden 029 head. Is this sturdy enough? > as long as you remember that depth-of-field is nil. Thats OK because I primarily want it for birds > need to use stop-down metering and remember to close the aperture before you > shoot. Now I am confused. You mean I can't just set the aperature and let the the camera set the shutter? I plan on using it on a ME Super and K2. Thanks again, and have s great weekend.
