Chilean Workers Must Adapt, Says Chretien
In an article in the January 27, 1995 Edmonton Journal, off of the wire
service, Prime Minister Jean Chretien told Chilean trade unionists that
they would have to adapt to the changes NAFTA would bring about
just as "Canadian workers have". There was no use protesting and
fighting the inevitable, he said. NAFTA will bring change and we all
have to adapt.
My, how times have changed since the last Federal Election when
Jolly Jean was Mr. No-To-Nafta unless there were some major
changes. Now he is its biggest Amigo. In fact we know that Canadian
workers have not adapted to NAFTA or the original FTA. Contacts
with CUT and other Chilean unions and Argentinian comrades must
be made now.
The Political Action Committee of CUPE Local 474, Edmonton Public
School Custodial Workers, will be bringing forward motions to the
Alberta Federation of Labour Convention and the CUPE Alberta
Division Convention calling for an International Solidarity Campaign
with Chilean unions in countering the Chretien myth that all is well in
Canada afta nafta.
