Hmmm, if $thing is a complex expression I wouldn't want to shove it
all onto one line.

        defined(some_really * complex + expression with function(calls))
            and return $IT;

doesn't win you much over:

        my $it = some_really * complex + expression with function(calls);
        return $it if defined $it;

You save a few characters.  Take a typing class. ;)

Maybe it makes one-liners flow better?
