I’ll add a few more considerations to this discussion. Gaps beneath the doors should be minimized. Door sweeps are a good option, but only if the floor or threshold beneath the door is level. The Xcluder sweeps, if sized just right and installed properly, are quite effective, and should be expected to outlive many of the cheaper plain vinyl or rubber sweeps. Drop-down bayonet kinds of sweeps (such as those manufactured by Pemko) can similarly be effective, but one should be cautious to minimize the amount of the rubber strip showing at the bottom, lest mice will nibble through it in short order. Another option to reduce the gap is to install a new wood or metal threshold beneath the door. This is particularly appropriate where the floor has become worn from decades of foot traffic.
The astragal gap between double doors should be minimized as well. This may be accomplished by installing shims behind the hinges or by retrofitting the doors with an astragal closure, such as that made by Xcluder. The various kinds of brush sweeps can afford some amount of protection against insect and rodents, but a determined mouse or rat can often push through the bristles. Gaps in door frames and other sites can and should certainly be sealed. Plain steel wool is probably not a good option, as it will soon oxidize and deteriorate. Stainless steel or copper wool / mesh would be far better choices. I’d advise staying away from filling gaps with expanding foam, unless the voids are first filled with something far more substantial. Richard J. Please see below a little summary of the suggestions: · Metal-coat the threshold and the outer bottom lip of the door to prevent gnawing (e.g., aluminium/brass threshold cover plates). · Fit brush style door sweeps, e.g. Xcluder pest control door sweep https://buyxcluder.com/xcluder-commercial-pest-control-door-sweep-134.html<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__buyxcluder.com_xcluder-2Dcommercial-2Dpest-2Dcontrol-2Ddoor-2Dsweep-2D134.html&d=CwMGaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=GO7C3XN3WgFy2IP-bFBbnUs_CYntqj57Dprtl40-_KE&m=BlJCWsqpkPaC3YlhoPmMPwDlYmV6xeEcj9N8UYQ-nEg&s=FQIC8NQeL9LKUkcK6Cim-FYQNnROZQkooLf2kPPJzGk&e=>, or Sealeze Sealeze.com<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__sealeze.com&d=CwMGaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=GO7C3XN3WgFy2IP-bFBbnUs_CYntqj57Dprtl40-_KE&m=BlJCWsqpkPaC3YlhoPmMPwDlYmV6xeEcj9N8UYQ-nEg&s=-RsWaR9tri9V9ee2c2QUt9i8wCkxAbD-Q6WgW33GoQc&e=>. · Fill any gaps/holes with steel/brass wool. It's available from suppliers like Grainger and McMaster-Carr in cases. The doors in question are solid wood with wooden thresholds; there is a gap under all of the doors which is not big but I suspect just large enough for the mice to squeeze through. They are closed most of the time but lead to our lecture theatre and when they are open are frequented by hundreds of feet. I am therefore looking for a solution that is secure and sturdy at the same time. And cost-efficient, of course.
