BTW, I think it's interesting to compare Shallan Meier's centerfold
(Sep 2002) side-by-side with Giuliana's.  The settings have very
similar colors.  Shallan's CF image doesn't appear to have been edited
much: she has moles, skin texture in fingers, etc.  However, to me
Shallan's CF looks much less harsh, much more pleasant, than
Giuliana's.

I think Shallan's CF is much smoother and more even in color: I might
say, it appears to have a different color response profile as it moves
from light to shadow.  I apologize for my bad terminology; it's very
difficult for me to describe color and light.  I don't seem to have
the right vocabulary...
