I have had a full week to look at the April centerfold and I am now clear about what is bothering me about it.
My attention is always pulled most strongly into Giuliana's face, and
this is the area of this centerfold that displeases me the most. The
problem for me is that there just isn't sufficient resolution in her
face. That results in a feeling on my part that the color is muddy,
or that her face isn't quite in focus (although it is, actually).
This was really brought out when I looked at this centerfold directly
next to Shallan Meier's centerfold which has very similar colors
(Shallan's centerfold was also photographed by Stephen Wayda, BTW).
Shallan's face is full of detail, and as a result the colors look
precise and clean; her face appears clear and sharp. I can see
individual eyebrow hairs and eyelashes, and a full range of colors.
That's not the case with Giuliana, where her face appears "smeared" in
comparison.
So once again this comes down to a loss of resolution.
I am now 100% convinced that this centerfold came from a digital
camera, after having spent some significant time looking at it. My
personal judgement is that just like medium format film, the digital
camera doesn't yet have enough resolution to produce a print
centerfold that looks as good as that produced by the 8x10 source
image that was used prior to 2004.
IMO a three page foldout involving a human face is just too demanding
an application for even the best, current digital cameras.
I still long for the tried-and-true 8x10 camera source centerfold.
There's no question that that level of resolution works perfectly for
the level of enlargement required.
