You really aught to try 7.6.1... as this site describes why:  http://

7.6.1 gives you the smaller footprint of Mac OS 7, but allows you to  
use a lot of newer Mac OS 8-era software such as Internet Explorer 5.

I can never get enough of advocating 7.6.1 - I put that site together  
on a 1400c.

7.5.3 on my PB 1400, I am pressed for cash and I have 8.1 on it right
now, and would like to decrease the footprint of the OS for the
