Adil al-Kalbani is one of my favourite reciters. I have been informed he is the son of a freed slave of King Khalid, his mother was the slave-girl to the king. He is 6 foot plus, red bloodshot eyes and is surrounded by an entourage of Police guards (ready to handcuff him). He is known to give alarming khutbahs usually speaking against the Government and injustice ending up in jail. He rings his Mother (King Khalid's daughter) who helps bail him out. Its an endless cycle! His speech about the Gulf War, castigating the Kuwaitis present in the Jamah was phenomenal. His Jumuah khutbas are usually packed, the car-parks are full of musallis. Unusually enough, he has a very strong female following. He has been asked to lead prayers in the Haram but keeps on declining the honour saying: The Black Slave is not worthy of leading masses in such a holy precinct. (Ibn Maja) Shaykh Adil ibn Salim al-Kalbani, in my humble opinion, is a striking example of these hadiths. I first heard his recitation around 10 years ago (the Sura Maryam recording i've attached) and I've been an ardent fan of his recitation ever since. The Shaykh is of African origin and was an imam in Riyadh for many years. Alhamdulillah, Allah Ta'ala has blessed him with a unique style of recitation which really captivates the heart, and I've never heard anyone cry more than him whilst reciting Qur'an. He led the tarawih prayers for the past two nights in Al-Haram al-Makki and has apparently been appointed imam of the Haram. Listen to the recording of Sura Maryam I've attached. The Shaykh usually recites in the riwaya of Hafs 'an Aasim, but this recitation is according to the riwaya of Shu'ba. He really brings the stories of Sura Maryam alive in this recitation. May Allah Ta'ala give us all the tawfiq to recite the Qur'an with such earnestness.
