Both solutions proposed worked out very smoothly. I'm certainly going to 
use the gWidgets package more often in my future R projects.

   svalue(valsCb, index=TRUE)<- 1
}
addHandlerChanged(namesCb, function(h,...) updateCb(svalue(h$obj)))
updateCb(svalue(namesCb))
