ABC News Fri, 31 Mar 2000 7:53 AEST Amnesty slams Australia over UN attack Amnesty International says Australia has shown a deplorable lack of respect for UN committees, by attacking a report issued last week by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The government says the report, which criticised Mandatory sentencing laws and asked Canberra to review them, was not credible. Amnesty says the government is discrediting 55 years of hard work by Australian diplomats. Australia's own diplomacy has helped build up the UN human rights Committee System. Now, Amnesty says, by criticising it the Howard government is further eroding the country's once excellent reputation on human rights. But the group says it comes as no surprise. The current administration has yet to seriously consider a single UN Committee criticism. Amnesty says it is very concerned that the real reason for the government's review is political unwillingness to confront domestic human rights issues in accordance with international standards. © 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- _________________________________ Truth is a pathless land. --- Krishnamurti ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
