Joe, Possible quite old - as you may know, the Jewish New Year is called Rosh ha Shannah or "the head of the year", so somewhat similar to "crown of the year". Wouldn't surprise me if it goes back to Ancient Egypt. In the church it is called "the crown of the year" or "pi`xlom `nte tirompi" although I don't know how new or old this phrase is, it is in all the church hymns for new years which probable dats back atleast to the 14th or 15th century if not more. >From: "Szelog, Mike" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: "'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: RE: [RemEnKimi] Nowruz >Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 08:27:24 -0400 > >Nofri Imad, > >Yes, you're correct - the term used for the Coptic New Year is from Persian >(Farsi) and means "New Day" (year is actually "sol" - meaning 'sun'). > >I'm not sure why the term for this holiday was borrowed from Persian, >always >been a bit curious about that!
