============================================

church may adopt aarti, sanskrit - times of india october 25
by abhay vaidy / tnn

=============================================

The Catholic church will take up the study of Sanskrit, adopt to monastic life
in an ashram and adopt Hindu ritual of aarti during mass if the movement
towards "indianization of the church" gets its nod from 400 priests and 5
bishops congregating in Pune.

Starting Tuesday, Pune's Papal Seminary which is celebrating the 50th
anniversary of its transfer from Kandy (Sri Lanka) to Pune will play host to
the priests for three days.

Discussion will cover thestate of the church in India and the movement for its
Indianization. The catholic church already adopted a number of Indian
traditions and practices and has come a long way four decades after the
historic Srcond Vatican Council (1962-63) brought an epochal shift in the
modern church through its declaration on religious liberty.

The Papal Seminary, which has ordained over 1250 priests during past 50 years
has continued with its modernization effort along with its associate
institutions such as Jnaana - Deepa Vidyapeeth (JDV), formerly the Pontefical
Athenaeum and the De Nobili College. Pune based Catholic Leaders like Joseph
Neuner, Kurien Kunnumpuram, Francis X D'Sa, John Vattanky and Subhash Anand
have been stressing for lesser controlfrom the Vatican to make the Church
"truly Indian and genuinely Christian".

As Francis X D'Sa, an internationally acclaimed Sanskrit Scholar noted in his
paper published in "Dreams and Visions: New Horizons for an Indian Church
(2002): Today, the time has come for the Indian Church to shed its image of a
multinational company and retrieve those characteristics which bring out its
"catholicity" in the best sense of the word."

Pandikattu Kuruvilla, a teacher of philosophy at the as Jnaana - Deepa
Vidyapeeth (JDV) and the Papal Seminary's Director, Ornella Coutinho, explained
that a number of traditional India religious customs and practices have already
been embraced by the Catholic Church to become truly Indian.

"A number of Christian priests for example strictly follow the Indian ashram
system of monastic life such as thjose at Bethany Veda vijnaana Peeth (Pune),
Satchitananda Ashram (Trichy), Kurusumala Ashram (kerala), Sameskshana Ashram
(Kalady, Kerala), . Kruvilla said "Practicing vegetarianism, organizing
satsangs, and readings from the Bhagavad Gita during mass, reducing the use of
cassocks (white robe worn by priests), performing pooja-style prayers are some
of the changes that have taken place, he said.

Dear Kedarnath,

I am not sure if this forum is meant to discuss this sort of thing, but
having raised it, I would strongly urge you to read Sita Ram Goel's book on
'Catholic Ashramas' and see what kind of damage Fr.Bede Griffths and
Raimundo Panikkar have done. They were all forerunners of this highly
controversial movement.

Regards, AR

Dear All,

I recently went to Srirangam to take a dip in Kaveri in this holy month, and
tried in vain to look for the legendary Vani Vilas press, but in vain. I
heard that it is going to shut shop and wanted to buy a complete set of
their publications, if available.

Can anyone help me in this regard, and if Vani Vilas is still active, can
the contact details be provided?

Similar is the case with Balamanorama Press in Mylapore (where I live) but
it has gone defunct. May I know if anyone (willing) who has possession of
this work so that I can take xerox copies. I have some books with me that I
am willing to share in return. Balamanorama usually published college text
books but I found them to be very useful and of good standard.

Kind Regards, AR

May be so, but they still insist that Jesus was born of a virgin
woman [no carpenter is that foolish] and that he died to atone other
people's sin :-)
