Hi,
I'm really a novice. But I was wondering if this question (or the
answer) below can be better explained by checking the chandas of the
sloka. That is, I'm suggesting which of the variants - tulyam or
tattulyam will fit the rest of the sloka correctly.

Dear Shivaushadhi,
Many expert members have offered their explanations to your queries. Hope it
should have made you aware of the phonological system and alphabet used for
writing Sanskrit language.It seems that you are comparing with English
Alphabet which uses no symbols to represent vowels in contrast with
Devanagari script.
It is similar to the English alphabet in as much that it does not use
symbols, to represent the vowels present in the individual letters of
alphabet. For example, k though the constant is represented in writing, it
does not represent how the letter is pronounced or named "k[ay]" , or b
[ee], or c[ee] and the like. I am only quoting from how we learn them in
India. and in pronunciation also the vowels are at all dropped, and in
addition, the graphic presentation of letters representing the vowels are
added to the consonants. without any change in the alphabet. In the same
way, it is the reverse in Sanskrit k[a] ? is graphically presented with the
implicit pronunciation of the consonant in the alphabetical system, where as
it is not present in the English alphabetical system. This makes the
difference. Just like you add the vowel in graphic to the consonant, we have
to remove the "a" symbol when we want to represent the consonant only
present in the letter of the alphabet and now it is accomplished with a
symbol below the letter ?? like you can see it. This makes the precise
difference between the two alphabets. The joining of the remaining vowels is
as in english words in graphical presentation, but the syllabic nature of
English words makes the difference in pronunciation in contrast with
Sanskrit words. By practice, I hope you should be able get this problem
over.
I remember, Dr. Ashok Aklujkar, who was profession in British Columbia
University, Canada had released a Reader with audio lessons some years ago.
I do not have the information of it. If you need it, I can get it from our
library and pass it over to you.

Fot the meaning the mind's shiva, or perhaps, "the shiv in the mind" if you

In regards to using a felt tip pen & devanagari calligraphy: I have been
very excited to get a felt tip calligraphy pen ever since I saw the
examples in Lambert's book on the Devanagari Script. I will certainly
invest in one now, thank you.
Thank you for clarifying that a consonant must have a vir?ma to indicate
that there is not a vowel at the end of it.
Would the anusvara & visarga be considered the same way as a vir?ma, meaning
that all three would replace the "a" sound at the end of the consonant with

Hello Siva,From what little Sanskrit I have learnt in school and later
through my own pursuit, I know that halanta/virama and anuswara have totally
different meanings.Only common case would be a "ma" with a halanta=
hal-anta(ending in a plough) .
In this case the last vowel would be read as a anuswara on the last but one
vowel.
Eg. Ramam(???? or ????? )

I must recommend a free "e-book" though it is really more than a book,
called Samskrita Pad?pik?. It discusses all these topics we have been
speaking of, plus it has some interactive practice pages, all on the
computer. It may be downloaded at
http://www.sanskrit-lamp.org/
It is nearly 40 MB and I suppose its speed will depend on your
computer.
