Hi all,
My Sanskrit teacher found this book, 'The Wonder that is Sanskrit' and gave
us some copies of a chapter today. I thought it would be of use to the
group. Here's a section that is particularly interesting:

The whole section is worth a read, but if you're in a hurry, the last para
in page 46 to page 47 is the most amazing part of it all. It is an example
from the Padukasahasram that has been spoken about here before (the one
with the ya.ya.ya.ya..(ya^32) verse), and solves the Knight's
tour<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight%27s_tour>problem very nicely,
and makes another verse out of it to boot!

have actually reproduced the line printed in Devanaagari: ????????????? ?.?.?

People with whom I had discssed this verb, did say that they believed 'jayate'
is of the vedic origin but no one could show it to me in print. The editions
we, all said 'jayati'.
The two editions of the ????????????? which I have seen are some ten years
apart(between 1950 and 1960)and were both published by Geeta Press Gorakhpur
and they both say 'jayati'.
Last year I had spoken to Geeta Press people on phone from Mumbai but they did
not come back; I had then sent an email, followed by a reminder after some two
months but as it has happened, I have not received their response.
Would you, therefore, kindly favour me with the edition year and who the
publisher is from where you have extracted the line ??????? ???? ??????? ??????

Sri HNBhat has almost cracked the riddle.
Here is my version.
I became like Rama like these.
janasthaana means a town.Also the area of Dandaka where Rama wandered.
I wandered in towns because of my blurred intellect to get the mirage of gold.
Rama also had a blurred intellect to get the golden deer.
I was saying in every step with tears ?give?. Rama also was similarly crying
in every step ?vaidehii? with tears in his eyes.
I met enough of unworthy persons.
Rama sent arrows in the row of faces of the lord of Lanka i.e.Ravana.
But I did not get kushala and vasutaa - happiness and wealth - unlike Rama who
got Sita.(Kusha-lava-sutaa).
The words having two meanings here are these.
1. janasthaana meaning town and the area of Dandakaranya.
2. kanaka mrigathrishnaa and kanakamriga thrishnaa
3. vai dehi and vaidehi.
4. kritaalam kaabhartuH and kritaa lamkaabhartuH
5. paripaaTiishu ghaTanaa and paripaaTi ishughatanaa
6. kushalavasutaa(meaning sita) and kusala vasutaa

Does the word Satya mean truth here or something more like permanent ? What
is the Nirukta of Satya ?
If you take it to mean permanent , then a worldly advise is evident as that
the one which is more permanent prevails .

PS: I am trying to collect instances of linguistic innovations in Sanskrit.
jayati/jayate attracted my attention from that angle and hence I raised the
query. Yesterday Vidya-ji found jayate published in a 1910 edition, although I
request her (by this mail) and all you scholars to favour me with instance or
instances of jayate used at places other than Mundakopnishad 3.1.6. I have not
found any other instance.
I have some questions fo certain usages in BhagwadGeeta as well but will deal

I would say first, that Shankara and Madhva have a
different reading for the upanishhad mantra in question. This is certainly not
the only example of differing texts between these two Acharyas. Second, I
believe we have to allow anomalous word forms to occur at several strata of
Sanskrit writings, from the Vedic to the Medieval Kavyas. Vasu's Siddhanta -
Kaumudi, vol. 2, p.157 has this to say about ji - dhAtu:
?? ??? ???? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ? ?? ???????????????? ?
??????????? ? ????
?? ??? ' to surpass, excel. ' This root ends in a vowel, and
appropriately ought to been classed with vowel - ending roots, and not here
among consonant ending roots. jaya means to get excellence. This is
Intransitive. The root ?? ' tp obtain victory ' is Transitive. Present form
???? ?
