Here is all I know about it: 1. The poem is set in the context where Rama has just killed Vali, and Tara comes to know of the tragedy. She rushes to see her dead husband, and the poem is about her lamentation, and her exhorting Rama to kill her too. 2. It begins, "atha vidita vRttAntA ...", and the metre is one that is at least longer than Vasantatilaka. 3. One source suggests the author is a certain 'shAntarAja', but I do not know how accurate it is. 4. It was part of a non-detailed text in Sanskrit in the PUC board exams in Karnataka about 40 years ago. Please let me know if you've heard of this poem. Is it also in Kamba-Ramayana? If so, I would greatly appreciate the reference to that poem, even better the poem itself! I can almost hear my mother's sweet voice (she had one of the sweetest voice that I have experienced) even now, evoking so much pathos! It is incredible to imagine my crying in response! Actually I think this pralapam also is a part of the Telugu repertoir of similar "lamentations" -- pralapams (such as Gandhaari, Paanchali and so on) and kalapams or kalahams, such as Satyabhaama's. I remember those things because of my father who was forever rehearsing these things for the Telugu theater. He, as was usual in those days, would practice narration and acting out both in prose and poetry. The latter would involve a bit of dancing which now I recognise as Kuchupudi style. If by chance anyone has any version of the Tara-pralapam (perhaps it was more of a "kalaham" -- the cogent arguments that Tara was presenting to Rama challenging him to justify his adharmic act of making her a widow), please let me know the reference to that also. To the delight of general populations in non-urban areas, there is abundant literature of this genre, in folk theater such as yaksha-gana, bailu-aaTa of Karnataka, Bommai-atam, Kuchupudi in Andhra, Kudiattam, Kathakali in Tamilnadu and Kerala, Yatra/Jatra in Orissa/Bengal, BiaTak/Katha in the North and so on. Unfortunately we are losing this precious treasury of cultural wealth very fast. But it is wonderful to discover that Sanskrit literature provides bricks to lay the foundation of the edifice of this wealth. Your quiry to find such a brick is wonoderful. I hope we find it and many more such as this. Sorry, this was an unwarrented long response, I just got carried away. Regards to all, A. Iyengar.
