Same problem here after upgrading to Karmic. Problem is caused by Jaunty installing sql 5.0 but not selecting the MySql meta package. Therefore MySql is not updated to 5.1 during the upgrade to Karmic and Akonadi fails to start. Simple selecting the mysql-server package will fix the problem.
