Paul,

Some are, some aren't and were published in Electric Radio.

Then there is one that never made it to publishing due to Bill's sudden
departure from this life.

I sent out Links to the schematic earlier. While NOT well documented,
Most savvy hams can work their way through.

Let me know what you are looking for.

The audio mods are VERY simple and easy to do. They expand the audio
width by replacing a couple of caps.

Note that the potentiometer in the cathode of the modulator should be

  Jim,

The manual copies I have do not show what series.

There is one neon lamp shown, and it is designated as the "pilot lamp".

They may indeed made a later version, however - I haven't seen it or one.

There have been way too many models of Hallicrafters for me to keep up with.

Re: [AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread johndtate
I have a DX-60 with the W3CK mods. It's AMAZING how many UNSOLICITED
AWESOME AUDIO reports I receive. People simply are sometimes in awe
that I am on a DX-60 (with the help of either an SB-200 or a Henry
2K4). These are usually more seasoned AMers too. These mods are not
difficult and are very effective. The stock DX-60 is not bad at all
however. As for worrying about holes... well... there are a LOT of
DX-60's still out there. If you have a perfect example, then maybe you
should leave it alone. My radio is not a museum shelf piece but a
working transmitter.

The over modulation indicator works spot on. When I see it flash more
than just a very dim red on peak audio, I can be assured I am over
driving the audio. A glance at the envelop on the scope confirms
flat-lining on the negative peaks. It is very accurate.

The carrier level adjustment is something I'm not sure I could live
without now. It has become part of my tuning process. You see when
you adjust it, you have to touch up the audio level and sometimes the
loading and tuning to get everything "balanced". This ability is VERY
handy when driving a linear amplifier. It's sort of difficult to
explain but looking at a scope during tune up will clear that up.

Bill also published a hint about the accessing the audio gain pot
without taking the chassis cover off. I use a wooden "ka-bob" skewer
bought in a pack of them from Wally-world (aka Walmart). They cost
less than a couple bucks. I whittled one end into the shape of a
flat-blade screwdriver. Looking down from the top ventilation holes,
you can see the audio gain pot. The hole directly above it becomes the
access with this long wooden "screwdriver". I just leave it in place
with a half inch handle. Works great.

Anyone wanna try some 40 meter AM tonight?

  Ted,

The "discussed" WC3K mods do NOT require ANY holes, AND all are readily
reversible.

The over-modulation modification was "cleverly" performed by removing
ONE screw on the front panel, and placing the LED there!

I haven't put a single hole in the DX-60 that I have.

Even the PTT mod requires NO holes in the Old Gal!

Re: [AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread rbethman
Plate modulation is indeed a "possible" path to take.

If so, then you must decide whether to "outboard" the plate tranny - OR
begin to hack up the DX-60.

Each follows their "own" path.

Personally I chose to go with NO plate modulation, leaving the radio as
controlled carrier.

I made some of the WC3K mods. Then again, I also knew Bill personally
and made a number of trips to his "Laboratory"/Ham Shack.

I went to a TX-1 for a plate modulated Heath rig.

It was shortly followed by the addition of a BC-610.

Re: [AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread Ted Gustafson
I for one like to just leave things alone. One of the things I try and do
when I bring a old dog back to life I try and remove all the thing folks did
over the years to "make it better". Sometimes things just can't be undone or
I figure it is not worth the time and effort. If you find the right mic and
adjust the rig as it should it will sound fine. Good clean intelligible
audio. Then there are folks like the guy in the TV add talking about his
tube amp, "It will reproduce sounds only a dog can hear". You can get
carried away. And I am not saying I have NEVER modified a rig. 30 years from
now some guy will look at one of them and say, "Why would anyone do
something like that to a nice old vintage rice box like that. But I did
draw the line at putting extra holes in it.

I have had better luck with a D104 than any of the other dozen or so mics I
have tried on the older rigs. It seem to like my voice better. Every one of
the mics I have has its own "sound".

Good luck and have fun.

Re: [AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread rbethman
All,

I do indeed have the "over modulation" modification, however I believe
that is one of those published in ER.

The one that I *DO* have, that most likely is NOT out and published, is
not very well documented. However, Bill gave me a complete "FINAL
Heath" manual, with the schematic containing the PTT mod. The audio mod
is there, and I do not remember off-hand if the 160mtr mod is.

The only thing I have in a transmittable form would be the "last"
schematic. I certainly haven't scanned the remainder - which included
the ER articles.

I have NO idea what size files that all can handle. I have broadband
connectivity, so I can either send the schematic in its three pieces, OR
I can load them on my website for download, giving you the direct links
for the three pieces. BE ADVISED! Each is approx 3MB in size!

These are the links to my website for the pieces of the schematic. The
size is due to keeping the clarity up to use!

I believe that most are quite able to read them and figure them out!

(I type by the Columbus Method - seek out, land upon - and discover)
All typos are inadvertent and due to going too fast!

Re: [AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread cemilton

I concur with NØDGN's comments about the W3CK mods. I applied them to my DX-60
and everything works fb. I've used it with an SB-200 and received good
reports. Bob, if there are other DX-60 mods he did not publish I'd certainly
like to read them if that's possible/appropriate.

And Dick, K6KWQ, I'd recommend not modding just to have plate modulation. As
Bob stated, controlled carrier modulation (properly adjusted) works just fine.

YMMV

ive serious to the mods published by the late WC3K.
Bill was a satellite engineer, and spent a large part of time in his
laboratory"/ham shack, working on the DX-60. He made a number of
odification, including adding 160Mtrs, PTT, and audio.
He used his to drive a 30S1 on occasion, along with a 30L1. sometimes
t was barefoot.
There really is no need to attempt to make it a plate modulated Tx.
ontrolled carrier as it was designed and built, works very well. The
roblem is that some operators push the audio too hard. This is
articularly an issue sine the audio gain is a pot INSIDE the radio,
nly accessed by opening the cabinet.
Bill, WC3K, had a simple mod for observing the level of modulation,
ithout drilling holes.
Most if not all were published in Electric Radio.
I "may" have the very last mods by him, that did NOT get published due
o his unfortunate departure.

Re: [AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread Hal Dale
With a properly adjusted DX60, there is nothing wrong with the audio as it is.
I have heard many DX60's ran thru linear amps that sound excellent.
The basic speech amp in the DX60 is not much different than most. I have two
DX60's, One I mod for screen mod and the other is stock. I am told they both
sound excellent.
The screen mod unit only runs at about 15W. Of course, the control carrier will
put out a bit more power on peaks.
As I said, adjusted properly, there is nothing wrong with controlled carrier.
Just my opinionHal, WB4AEG
