[Chat] Internet TV service Aereo to launch in Baltimore

2013-11-24 Thread Emil Volcheck
Hello, neighbors,

I've been paying attention to Internet TV services in the hope that
they will mature enough so that I can save paying $90/month for our
DishTV satellite TV service. The Aereo service looks like it has some
momentum. It will provide you web access to local channels plus some
basic cable-type channels for a monthly fee. Learn more here:

https://aereo.com/preregister/bal

I can't say whether this will be a good deal yet, but I will follow
it. I previously subscribed to Ivi TV (http://www.ivi.tv/), which
worked well at providing broadcast TV over the Internet, but it
couldn't survive lawsuits from the cable industry.

Thanks,

--Emil

I registered on this site several months ago but I haven't heard anything.

A challenge to this approach is, ironically, the electricity cost. There
was an article in the WSJ several weeks back. The way it works every
subscriber essentially gets their own antenna/tv card on the host server.
While each one of these chips might only take a 1/2 a watt... multiply
that by hundreds of thousands of subscribers and the electric bill alone
for this service could become quite crippling. Interesting idea though and
I too look for a time when there won't be the cable monopoly.

best, Chad
