Water started coming out of a crack in the road in front of 3046 Guilford a
month ago. I reported it to 311 (#13-00637664). It continued to leak and
nothing was done; a couple weeks ago it had created a foot-diameter hole in the
asphalt; by this week the hole was probably ~2 ft round and the road around it
was sinking. I don't know why the city let it leak for so long and undermine
the pavement. Did anyone else report the leak?

I went outside, and a city crew is working at the other end of the block (near
the southwest corner of 31st and Guilford). They are digging up part of
Guilford Ave. I was told we should have our water back in a couple of hours.

I just saw Emil's post on the chat list. He lives right near where the crew is
working, and they clearly are working hard. It takes a lot of work and money
to maintain ancient water mains.

And thanks Emil to for encouraging the fixing of the problem.

One thing I guess we all are aware of is that the water distribution

will not be because of the expense. At least I am not seeing any
flooding outside, but I may go out and take a look.

I went out a little while ago (just before it rained), and there was
still water coming out from the hole in the street. My guess is that
last night, they simply restored water service but that they still have
a sizable repair to do. There is a traffic cone to warn motorists to go
around the hole in the street.

We will probably lose our water service again when the repairs are
made. Hopefully, the city will warn us ahead of time.

I was going to call it in last week but saw a repair truck just pulling up.
Not sure what they did then but
the water was still bubbling up when I came back from Philly. It has been
bubbling up for
quite a while. They started working on it sometime last night after 6PM. Emil
and I were speculating
about whether they were working at night to get overtime but maybe they were
working somewhere
else during the day. Still with it going on for weeks, not sure why it became
an emergency that
needed to be fixed in the middle of the night. Water came back on at 6 AM.

Steve,

The City is working on fixing a leak at my end of the block. I spoke
to the crew a few minutes ago and a worker said the water should be
out for a few hours. About a week or two ago, water started pooling
in a pothole, and I feared we'd have a break in a water main. I'm
glad the city is getting to this, but I miss running water too!

Thanks,
