My only experience with Brother multifunction printers was really
negative.  I don't remember the model number now, but there was
absolutely no support for it, I couldn't even get it to print (much less
use any of the other functions, aside from stand-alone copying).

Some of the older models don't scan right, even with XP.  I have a MPC-9600
that will only copy and print, but won't scan. The newer models are fast, but
the paper trays are kind of delicate--I keep a bottle of super-glue handy to
fix broken plastic parts.

Xsane is a very good application.  If it is supported by Xsane, you will likely
have a better experience than I did with your Brother scanner.

I have an HL-2070N, and it supports ipp and has an ethernet port so
using it from Linux is dead simple, it always works.

Our Brother printer has been great.  No experience with their
