  According to https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/sys-libs/compiler-rt
"sys-libs/compiler-rt" is a "Compiler runtime library for clang
(built-in part)" so like... dohhh. Use clang to support clang. The
real question is what else, besides clang and its libraries, are you
building that requires clang?

You can build it with USE="-clang", but that defeats the entire
purpose of building compiler-rt.

When I tried USE=-clang emerge -uaDvN @world, I got this:

[...]

 * Building using a compiler other than clang may result in broken atomics

Does the compiler-rt ebuild override USE in make.conf?

That message comes from sys-libs/compiler-rt which is a dedicated
runtime lib for clang. It makes sense to use clang if you're building
the clang toolchain... just like using gcc if you're building the gcc
toolchain.

You need to check this list carefully. If it is going to remove
anything you really want to keep, add it to the world file. In cases
where it is removing old version(s), you should be fine, unless you

[gentoo-user] --depclean wants to remove udev. What!?

Howdy all,

Once a month or so, or when told to by a news item, I run emerge with
the --depclean option.  I look at the list in case there something there
I want to keep or something that shouldn't be removed, like gcc or
something.  I ran it a bit ago and got back this:

The part that has me concerned is sys-fs/udev.  There's another that I'm
not sure about but that one caught my eye right away.  I don't recall
seeing anything posted on -dev about switching to something else or udev
no longer being needed and being removed.  I'm confused here.  Isn't the
virtual supposed to prevent this from being removed?  Is this a portage
change or did I mess something up somewhere?

This is what I show here depending either on the virtual or udev itself.

Anyone have ideas on this?  I mess up something?  Catch the tree in a
bad state?  Something else I'm not aware of?  It's not making sense to

Correct, my mistake. My point was that it's worth filing a bug since
it's possible that GCC support will be dropped upstream. But, the only
'news' I found on this regard [1] is quite old and it looks like GCC is
still being supported.

I found one problem: on my server, my apache log file had a 302 fetch

the future and started getting a 200 for it.  But still no emerge would
fetch a binary (even though there ARE good candidates).  On a guess, I
touched all the files in binpkgs an hour into the future, but that
didn't help.

Binary updates are VERY useful for virtual machines.

Unfortunately, there hasn't really been a resolution on this issue.

I think it's reasonable that if portage accesses a package on a binary
server and decides it's not eligible, it should report the reason for
rejecting it.

Is it possible to make requests for improvements in gentoo?

In the current case, llvm-common came across as binary, thunderbird
and firefox are also listed as a *binary* update, but llvm is an
*ebuild*.  Neither host (binary server) nor the client (updating
system) have any USE flags defined for llvm.  I know of no way to
figure out what went wrong.

Yes, that's absolutely true.

Most of the time, yes, you do need to do a depclean.  It's pretty
common to do it after every world update.  In general, it gets rid of
things emerged as a dependency of something else, and no longer
needed, either because you explicitly removed what pulled them in, or
that package was modified to no longer need it.

Yes, I've read that many times.  It's just this line in emerge(1) that
unsettles:

WARNING: Inexperienced users are advised to use --pretend or --ask
with this
option in order to see a preview of which packages will
be uninstalled.  Al-
ways study the list of packages to be cleaned for any
obvious mistakes. Note
that packages listed in package.provided (see portage(5))
may be removed  by
depclean, even if they are part of the world set.

Do you understand why it shows separate lines for "selected" and
"omitted"

No.  Did I miss that in my readings of the documentation?

You need to check this list carefully.  If it is going to remove
anything you really want to keep, add it to the world file.  In cases
where it is removing old version(s), you should be fine, unless you
know some reason the old one is still necessary for you, but this
seems unlikely.

"You need to check this list carefully. "  I haven't a clue what to
check for.  I didn't add any of those.  I presume that anything I
explicitly added would be in the world file.

Is the point here that I should write a script that always ensures that
nothing in my world file has crept into this list somehow?

I'm sure there's lots of things that I need that I didn't explicitly
add.  But I wouldn't know what they are, in order to check for them.
... okay, I see gcc up there.  I know I need gcc.  Presumably, it's just
one slot that's going to be removed. So I need to check if another slot
will remain populated.  That's presumably in the previous emerge output
somewhere.  Is that the point?

I mean, at one point of time or another, everything there was needed,
whether I recognize it or not.  That's not a sufficient test - whether
it's obvious to me or not.

>>> 'Selected' packages are slated for removal.

Explicitly stated, just so you know.

Okay, indeed, I did miss that and it's significance.  I'll look again
and see if I dare doing a depclean.

Nailed it.  After the post by Michael, I edited the kernel several
times.  I'm sure I ruled that thing out.  I had some crc stuff not there
but same error with or without.  I admit, I wouldn't have thought of a
kernel driver issue but the error did sort of lead that way.  Given the
CPU FLAGS is about the CPU and its instruction set, it could be a option.

I would never have thought of the CFLAGS in make.conf.  I'm not sure how
you figured that out either.  o_O  Before trying new settings for that,
I tried newer versions of clang, llvm and their friends to see if there
was a fix that wasn't applied to older versions.  When you unmask one
thing, it snowballs a bit.  Anyway, after getting a more recent version
of clang and llvm, it still failed.  At that point, I suspected that I
had ruled out those packages.  I did some digging to find what my CFLAG
settings should be if done manually.  It took some digging tho.  Once I
set that to the manual way, it compiled successfully on the first try.

So, my backup rig now has a web browser.  That's good.  ;-)  I wonder
why that bug report wasn't in the search results when I was digging for
the error???  If I see something Gentoo related, I always look.

While at it.  I don't think there is a way but I may have missed it.  As
a example, when I wanted to unmask/keyword specific versions of llvm and
clang, is there a tool to find out what all else has to also be
unmasked/keyworded?  When I tried to do that for the packages I wanted,
I ended up running emerge to find more that had to be added to the
list.  This is the list I ended up with.

sys-devel/clang
sys-devel/llvm
sys-devel/clang-common
sys-devel/clang-runtime
sys-devel/clang-toolchain-symlinks
sys-libs/compiler-rt
sys-libs/compiler-rt-sanitizers
sys-libs/libomp
sys-devel/llvm-toolchain-symlinks
sys-devel/llvmgold

It would be nice if there is a way to just run a command once and it
spits out a friendly list that can be added to the proper file.  Save
annoying some electrons and all.  ;-)

Thanks much to you both.  I hope if someone else runs into this, this
thread pops up in the search results.  Save someone some head scratching.

The only hard block here appears to be xscrnsaverproto, unmerge that and
the rest should take care of themselves. I had all the soft blocks today
but not that one, and everything worked fine.

[gentoo-user] Keeping 17-year-old Kylix software alive

2019-06-09 Thread Matthias Hanft
Hi,

many years ago, I created some libSomething.so with Kylix 3 (1)
which still worked with current (32bit) Gentoo systems (Kernel
4.14.83).

Using "revdep-rebuild.sh" (the *old* script!), for some time,
I already got messages like

broken /usr/local/lib/libxercesxmldom.so.1
/usr/local/lib/libxercesxmldom.so.1 (symbol __pthread_atfork version GLIBC_2.0
not defined in file libpthread.so.0 with link time reference
symbol __pthread_initialize version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file
libpthread.so.0 with link time reference)

but everything worked fine anyway ("libxercesxmldom" is part of
Borland's standard runtime libraries).

However, after upgrading glibc from 2.27 to 2.28 (or newer), this
is not true any more: Compiling and running a C program using the
old Kylix libSomething.so libraries causes Segmentation fault, and
Apache using a PHP extension which calls those libraries won't start
at all any more.

For recompiling the Kylix libSomething.so libraries, I'm keeping
alive a Suse 8.1 Linux (2) in VirtualBox (Kernel 2.4.19).

Do you see any chance to keep those Kylix libraries alive and
running? If it would help, I'd try to install the old Kylix on
a current Gentoo system and try to recompile there (although
I guess Kylix won't run on a current Kernel any more - if it
can be installed at all).

Switching to another (Pascal-/Delphi-/Lazarus-/etc.) Compiler
is not an option because the .so libraries are in fact "packages"
(BPL, a special Borland library version).

Is there any possibility for some "binary interface/gateway" to
use those libraries any more, or do I have to reprogram the
whole functionality with PHP?

I think I found something but not sure if it is what I think it is.  The
virtual says it needs one of the following:

sys-apps/systemd-utils[udev]
sys-fs/udev
>=sys-fs/eudev-2.1.1
>=sys-apps/systemd-217

Since systemd-utils is at the top, I looked to see if it was installed
or not, and it is.

[IP-] [  ] sys-apps/systemd-utils-250.7:0

as is:

sys-fs/u

It is weird indeed... Im running on kernel 4.15.16 and I needed to disable MSI
in
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf with " NVreg_EnableMSI=0" appended to the line
"options nvidia ...".
Thats the main differences I see with you from the software side.

This kind of error is usually due to a failed reload (not rebooting) or because
of a version
mismatch according to google, but I can't find any mismatch in the info you
gave us.

Good luck

[gentoo-user] Certain packages refuse to use binary from build save, the -k thing.

2023-09-15 Thread Dale
Howdy,

A couple of my video players are not playing videos correctly.  I've
rebuilt a few things but no change.  Some work fine, some give a error
about a bad index or something, some just don't even try at all.  The
videos come from various sources and are of different file extensions.
I can't find a rhyme or reason to the failure.  So, my plan, do a emerge
-ek world to reinstall all packages instead of just the obvious ones
that isn't fixing the issue.  I figure that should catch whatever is out
of sync and fix the problem.  If not, then try to figure out why it is
breaking the hard way.  This is basically a emerge -e world, just faster
on my main system.

What I did before this.  I ran emerge -eak world on my main install.
Any packages that showed ebuild, which means it doesn't have a package
binary, I emerged in my chroot.  Once it was done installing, I copied
the binary package over to my main install.  However, when I run emerge
-eak world again on my main install, it still shows ebuild for these
packages.

Most package are the way they should be, showing a binary.  Like this:

[binary   R    ] x11-libs/libX11-1.8.6::gentoo  USE="-doc -test"
ABI_X86="32 (64) (-x32)" 0 KiB

Does anyone know if there is some reason these packages won't use a
binary for some reason?  I've recompiled some of these twice now with it
refusing to show it using a binary.  I expect memtest and a couple
others to fail but never ran into this before.

I do this so that my main system updates faster.  A couple of those
packages has a bit longer compile time.  I might add, I've done this
countless times doing updates with no problems, most likely even with
these packages.  Today it just refuses to cooperate.

Oh, I posted about handbrake and opencascade blocking some updates in
another thread a while back, I unmerged those and Kicad which I think
used opencascade.  It did update some video stuff the other day.  I feel
some package is out of sync with some other package and hope a reinstall
will fix it.  Otherwise, could be a bug in some package version.

Any ideas?

Dale

:-)  :-)

P. S.  Fresh backups are still working on the new NAS system.  Also, the
speed is about the same as it was on TrueNAS.  It seems encryption on
both ends does slow things down.  I suspect it is the slower machine.
Still, it works.  Even if I switch to another OS, it can still see LVM
drives and I won't have to redo them again.  I hope.  :-D  At 7.6TB of
about 26TBs at the moment.

[gentoo-user] crossdev arm-unknown-linux-gnu failed

2018-05-26 Thread tuxic
Hi,

too feed a STM32F103C8T6 MCU (Core-M3) with some code to execute,
I want a compiler. For that I did a

crossdev arm-unknown-linux-gnu

. That one failed to build (gcc, binytils seem to be ok).

Unfortunately I did not really understand, what the great concerto
of logfiles (attached) are want to tell me. On the internet I found
an older thread of a person who seems (?) to have similiar problems
with the same target compiler, but no solution there was.

I am running Gentoo linux on a AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor.
This is a 64 bit system. The system is updated regularly.

I would be very happy, if someone, who better understand the topic,
could help me to get this thing running -- thank you very much in
advance for any help!

Cheers!
Meino

Re: [gentoo-user] moving over to nouveau drivers [solved]

gnome-control-center shows both but enabling the 2nd simply doesn't work.

This is all without trying to use wayland! Just plain gnome ...

I even tried the kernel-options to enable the HDMI .. hmm

 I played with stuff like xrandr --output HDMI-1 --right-of DVI-I-1 ...
this enabled the monitor ... and then somehow also the
 gnome-control-center settings started working!

I tested a reboot, looks good so far! Now on to wayland stuff ;-)

I don't get wayland running here ... see the attached log of a failing
attempt.

This is an up2date gentoo ~amd64 box with the gnome-overlay attached
(although to me it looks that the packages for Gnome 3.14 are moved into
portage anyway in these days).

While I am at it (doing the nouveau-move) I also wonder if my setup is
correct or as it should be.

Looking at the log-file I wonder about all the lines containing Failed
etc ...

I don't have an xorg.conf anymore and have set:

VIDEO_CARDS=nouveau
INPUT_DEVICES=evdev

The Xorg.1.log looks quite good, right?

;-)

[gentoo-user] evil ebuilds.

2018-07-11 Thread Alan Grimes
Portage seems to be fairly OK right now but these ebuilds are really
really being evil... I've spent about half a day on this bullshit so I'm
in a really fine mood right now.

Here are my masks right now, much of my mask file is obsolete, these are
the ones I've been working with today.
