It seems that my issues are caused by not xorg. Nor nvidias drivers, but by xfce4. Sounds odd but it is true. Something appears to be wrong with its resolution/display manager. I can use its settings to set the resolution back to 1600x1200, however it completely ignores the virtual, which drives
