Solved.
I had the kde overlay in git enabled. Dependencies are now calculated
properly when the overlay is disabled

OK, I see what you mean. Try this hacked-together list instead:

be emerge --usepkg kde-meta (to use the
binaries off the packages.iso). portage takes care of the dependencies of
packages automatically, so it will install xorg-x11 before anything that
needs it like kde.
If you haven't done a networkless install (stage3, snapshot, packages.iso, no
emerge --sync
to means the packages from
the packages iso. The correct command would be emerge --usepkg
kde-meta (to use the binaries off the packages.iso). portage

If you haven't done
sense though. I
thought I was going to have to unmerge *ALL* of KDE 3.4.
kde-base/kde is a meta-package, it doesn't contain anything itself, just
a bunch of dependencies for the KDE monolithic packages. unmerging it
doesn't remove any files.
Is emerge unmerge the exact some thing as emerge -C

How is your kde installed - the full packages or the split ebuilds?
If you emerged kde or kdepim, then you are going to get kmail as it's a
dependency. You can unmerge kdepim if you don't

Why oh why haven't these meta packages been unmasked yet? They work just
fine.
From a recent discussion on -dev, the 3.5.2 versions could be unmasked
soon. The previous versions were just too buggy to consider
infliciting on the stable users.

The way I'm slimming things down, I removed kde-meta from world, and then

in kde, my memory was at 95% utilized, and swap at 10%. With gentoo, in kde,

Thanks again - going into kde-meta, it seems that everything will be ok

there were updates from the layman part. I got lines like this:

I haven't changed any configs for layman except to add
